If I could remember half of what I've forgot over the years, I would be one smart dude.

My old 98 half ton pickup is about to rust away right under my feet, That and my boy has about beat it to death... I'm looking for a second generation Ram 4x4 pickup and have found a few that have the V6 and I want a V8, preferably a 318. My old truck has the 318 but it's 2 wheel drive. Will the 318 buckle up to the V6 4x4 transmission? Do I need to change the computer with a swap like this? Do I really want to go to this much work to get what I want?

You definitely need the computer that goes with the engine and transmission. They all communicate.

Do not do this. It isn't like it was in the 70s and before where everything could be swapped in a weekend. Smog laws, computer issues, the various wiring differences make this a reall ball buster. Sure, it can be done but it will cost more and take longer than it would to just wait for the right 5.2L truck to come up for sale.

myk

I agree.  If you need a truck with a V8 then get one...

That is pretty much what I expected to hear. At this stage of the game I really don't want to get into a lot of work that would take away from other projects. There are plenty of them around for sale but it seems like the V6's are cheaper.  Thanks for the input guys!

Isn't a "second generation Ram" a little older than the 1990s?   :scratchchin:

Second gen body style was from 1994-2001. I used to have a 94 single cab short bed 4wd. With a 318. Wish I kept it but it wouldn't pull the tractor.

That place is full of dumbass kids that when someone is actually trying to help them, they like to attempt to belittle them with idiotic statements in memes.
like the time I attempted to address concerns about an old skool chrome,14"  air cleaner sucking in hot air from Underhood. Or attempting to answer why their 44" tires and a 46RE trans do NOT mix...

If all you care about are morons talking sh*t about their "hook em bumper to bumper" mentality, then go for it. If you are looking for true, honest, keep you out of trouble tech, might I suggest the Ramforumz.
