I currently have the heat soaked starter issue on my 69 440 which has the stock exhaust manifolds. I have searched through the forums and read a lot of the posts about mini starters and how they seem to fix this issue. My question is if I do this upgrade is a starter heat shield recommended or will it be fine without it?

I just swapped my OEM starter out for a mini starter last week and am not running a heat shield since there is actually more room!  I did the same swap on my '71 Challenger with no heat shield and had no problems.

I have a mini with big tube headers and get heat soak :icon_smile_angry: with the starter wrapped. Looks like I may have to wrap a couple header tubes :rotz:

Probably due for a starter rebuild since you have stock manifolds.

Thank you for the input everyone. I am going to go ahead and just do the mini starter upgrade since that starter will be a lot easier to get back in.

myk

Which one are you going with?

I ended up going to my local Advance Auto and getting the starter for a 1995 Ram 1500 and put it in. It cost me $47 out the door and it is the one with a lifetime warranty.

Does it still have the wires snug to the block like others ?

yes, you still have to take that wire adapter off, and it's still close to the block, maybe about 1/4" clearance
