Replacing a cowl would make me want to part it out.  Ain't they a bitch to replace ?  If the cowl is all rusted, than I am sure the frame rails are rotted too.  :scratchchin:

didn't say the car was bad, just didn't want to see you get caught in a money pit

which is why I said to check real close, as  a 3rd gen with rusted out  A pillars /cowl/firewall  is if you have to pay to get fixed  :Twocents:

.... i value all you guys and your advice that you give me, I will follow what you guys say to do, I am gonna spend a couple hours tomorrow really looking at the engine bay and surrounding areas so if I find some more bad spots or areas i can get feedback from you all! Thx, everything is much appreciated. Mike

I have a '74 rallye in worse shape than yours.  It's a 4 speed 440.  I could have easily have parted it out a long time ago.   There just isn't a story in parting something out.  Long story but found another charger I wanted to see completed first.  Eventually I'll get back to this one.

Don't worry about some work.  Fit things in when you can.
'74 Rallye 4spd (WH23L4) (1 of 94)
'74 Rallye Auto (WH23L4) (quad black)
'69 Swinger 340 - 4spd
'70 Duster 340 - 4spd

Mike, what was your wife telling you ? (good or bad) ?
I am pleased to hear your frame rails are good.  That makes it one nice, easier/cheaper step forward.

Mike,

Good to hear the frame rails are solid. Don't worry about the other stuff it can be fixed. A lot of what you are seeing is typical of a 40+ year old car.

I wouldn't rush into undercoating anything. Undercoating is best applied to clean rust free surfaces to prevent rust in the future. Putting undercoating over dirty, rusted metal only seals in the rust and moisture and causes problems in the future. Do the floor pan repairs first and then see where you're at.

As a financial strategy it makes sense, but wasn't the whole idea here that you would get both cars, pretty much for free, as long as you did not flip them?  Sounds to me like you're doing exactly what he does not want you to do or am I reading this wrong?

Agree......

Very much hope we are both reading this wrong.

JMO.......I'm kinda old school......when I give my word, that's it. If it is within my power to do......I do it.

I paid 400 bucks for the 72, he has not given me the price on the 69 yet, one time he said not to worry about a price until he gets the ride, you are correct, I did give him my word, and I really mean to keep it IF I CAN, but before we do anything, we are gonna be straight with him, I believe that the 72 needs more help than I am capable of, sure I could pay someone else to do all the work, but like these guys say, it could cost a fortune and take many years. so what would you guys do, put them in the yard and use them for ornaments??? Or maybe try to talk with him and be honest with him and see what he thinks? We are gonna put it on the line sunday after church, if he wants them back, then no problem, if he wants me to keep them, no problem there either, I just ain't sure with all the advice I have been givin on here and what I have found so far if it wouldn't be better to show him how bad the 72 really is, and even tho I have only been able to see the 69 a couple times, I never really got to check that over, it could be worse, im fairly well off when it comes to money, but I ain't rich by no means, I just budgeted really well over a long period of time. If you guys that are giving me crap have a better idea, trust me, I'm all ears???, thx, mike

Definitely a good idea!!  Be honest.  He obviously doesn't have much of a cost/value idea until you tell him. The '72 is a money pit.  The '69 Charger... probably not.

ACUDANUT

I thought the deal was just to give him a ride in the 72 and then the 69 is yours ?  After taking him for a ride, sell the 72 and restore the 69.

Dino

So we're giving you crap and you wonder if you should be honest to the guy?  Wow!

I don't give a damn what you do with the 72 as long as you don't flip it as you promised him.  The fact that it will cost 10 times the cost to restore vs what it's worth is really irrelevant here, but the promise is.

Ever thought about paying it forward?  Finding a kid who has a dream about restoring one?  Maybe a father/son project?  The old man may like that idea.  How about a raffle to collect some funds for a good cause?  No flipper will buy this money pit, but a kid with a dream will be all over it.

This was his wife's car, it has a lot of sentimental value but no monetary.  If you do anything to turn that around then you make his worst fear come true so I think you should return the 72, forget all about this deal and buy what you want.

If I had been given a chance like this I would treat those cars as my children.  You don't find generosity like this much more.  But if you cannot commit to these projects because they would surpass their actual worth then let them go.  I think it would be in the best interest of the old man.

I gave a little advice about "not SCREWIN' the ol' feller" a while back, and haven't said much since...

"Handshakes, word, honor, and such..."

Now you and your "sasquatch" are back to scheming how to "help" Mr. Russell

In the beginning, it was a RIDE in the '72 for the chance at the R/T...

It all doesn't add up,  UNTIL YOU AND SASQUATCH RESEARCH ENOUGH to realize the potential money to be made!

Money ruins many "honest men."

Tell you what...  Offer to help research and sale both of the cars for the ol' feller, and put the maximum potential money into HIS pocket.

Afterwards, continue to have coffee, home cooked meals, & church with him...

Take your BALLS out of your wife's purse & be a MAN!  IMO  You deserve no financial gain from playin' the old man!!!

(Somebody needs to get ahold of him before you rob him BLIND!)

so did you find rust in the cowl/A pillars/firewall  ? you said the frame was good   :yesnod:   the rust looks to be mostly   cosmetic  apart from the floor

I'd fix that(floor) and get car running  and give him his ride in his wife's car ,then  the rest could be fixed at your leisure

don't remember reading that it had to be restored just running , look how many rat rods /beaters go to shows these days

get it roadworthy and just drive it and enjoy for a while  ,gets him in his car and you have kept you promise to an old man  :Twocents:

I agree.

Your word is your word.

This is one helluva story and that would make for an absolutely amazing one when you drive that '69 around in a few years. That car will always be something very special to you because of that, NOT just a random one off of eBay or Craiglist.

As far as the '72... maybe some young kid will see it in your garage or out back in some years and won't believe his eyes. Once you see that spark, you could continue the legacy while still having an incredible '69.
