guys, help, 1972 dodge charger

Guys, update, I just got back from town with the new parts, for the tune up, got the belts to, they looked bad also, but while I was gone, my son was looking at the car and found a softball size hole in the floor on the drivers side toward the left side, is that bad?

Have you pulled the carpet back or was this hole through the carpet and floor?  Be good to pull out the front seats and the look at the whole floor and see what areas need attention

Yes, pull the entire carpet out and what the floors look like...replacing floor sections is not hard. Neither is welding.

Not sure why no one else has said this yet...  But if you're going to get a free R/T outta the deal; stop fretting, and restore the darn thing!

Even if you spend over on this project, YOU'LL HAVE A #'S MATCHING R/T CAR! Still can't see how you'd possibly go wrong there.  You even said the boss likes the car, so fix it up for whatever it costs, and keep it as a nice mild 318 your wife can drive. 

You'll basically be doing exactly what he did...  Base Charger for the wife, 2nd Gen for you.

Based on what I've read thus far, you're already deep enough in.  Stop second guessing yourself, and F***ing do it Marine!

I highly doubt he was a Marine.

Yeah jb400, I just think it's funny how ppl get all up in someone's kool-aid, don't even know the flavor, Lolol. kind of sick today so im staying in, but will get more pictures when feeling better and ATTACK the charger again, but I did notice kind of a bad or soft spot on a few fenders while unloading it, not sure how bad it is, gonna buy some sanding tools, a metal cutter and dewalt grinder and im gonna get me a welder as soon as I feel a little better form harbor freight, my buddy likes his. I got the parts for the tune up, and new belts. but was looking it over real good last night, in 30 weather woke up with a head cold, oh well that's what I get for wearing a t-shirt the whole time. OORAH!!!

Tune it up.

Change the fluids, belts, hoses, etc.

Go through the brakes.

Make sure none of the tie rods or anything else on the suspension is about to snap.

Patch the hole in the floor with a piece of tin, pop rivets and some roofing tar.

Give it a good scrubbin' inside and out.

All of this shouldn't take more than one l-o-n-g weekend.

Drive it around the neighborhood a few times.

Cruise it on over to the old guys place and make him happy.

Get the R/T.

You might even find a volunteer or two to help you from this site.  

We've been working on these cars for decades.

On the welder, be careful on those low cost Harbor Freight jobs, many of them are flux core only welders. You really want one that is set up to use the shielding gas. There is a night and day difference between the weld quality when using a shielding gas welder over a flux core type. Do some reading up on MIG welding before you jump in on a welder. Just my

At first......well, it's the internet......wise people reserve judgement. As the story unfolded, and more details and pics are added, it becomes a compelling story.

I also think sawyer440 is a lot sharper then he may at first appear......

Chargerguy74, I didn't say I don't want the 72, i do want the 72, and me and my wife can't wait to fix her up and go for a cruise in her.if he keeps his word, I will buy the rt off him and we will fix that one up to and when they are done, my wife and I will gladly take turns, but I don't know where you got the idea that I didn't want the 72, cause, we do!!!.

Just what I got out of reading the thread. Thanks for posting pictures. I'm sure some people here wish they actually had a 71-72 Charger so they could finally post pics of it    Just kidding. I don't really care.
