WOW great story. I'd love to stumble on a deal like that. And more importantly gain a new friend, especially one that really needs a new friend. I betcha that a lot of previous approaches were like " Is it for sale" ? And once they heard the word "NO" they walk away grumbling. Just like you said in your story where your hunting partener said "forget it's not for sale" meaning that this old guy is unapproachable. But you found a way to get him to open up by you opening up to him.

Great accomplishment :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Good job and good luck

Yep the rallye doors alone on that '72 worth a ton if like pictured below.

My gut tells me that one should respect his wishes if one gets into this.  He clearly knows what he is doing, and what he wants.  He has made a character judgment about you and I think it is important to live up to that as best you can.  If he wants something unreasonable with the car, that is just not possible, but whatever is reasonable, I would try for.

Another story that may provide some perspective.  My 84 y.o. neighbor was speaking with my wife one day and she said she thought it might be good to find a project car to keep our 14 y.o. son busy.  He then came over and offered to have my son work in his yard for some time and he would sell an old bmw to us for $100.  In the end he gave it to my son for 1$.  We got it in the garage, I pulled out the inside to start work (rats nests and all) and found that it could have been Fred Flintstone's car, needed new floor pans, etc....The car is not worth it $$ wise, but we have been steadily working on it and my neighbor stops by to check and chat.  He also tells me everything we are doing wrong, but that is part of the interaction.  That (and the time with the kid) is what is making it worthwhile.  It makes a difference for me, and I think also for my neighbor.

So I advise sticking with this guys wishes and think you will get much more out of it than just the car(s).

your definitely on the right site to get all the info your looking for

that rallye  is worth solid cash if the vin etc. checks out  :Twocents:

no offence but  not everyone is into 2nd gen chargers only  ,there is a strong following for 3rd gen's too  :yesnod:

wrong time to be comparing prices ,wait a couple of months  for when there is a demand for cars again

you didn't mention vinyl  roof , that's a plus as far as rust is concerned.

does it show A57 on the fender tag ?( rallye )   even better if its got V21 hood treatment

       we definitely need pics   :yesnod:

He tells you it's a 72 Rallye, you're not sure if it is now given the info and pictures provided by members. You mentioned a black accent stripe. Is it perhaps a 73 Rallye?

you need to look through thre windshield,  on the left dash is the vin number  that combined with the codes on the fender tag ( left inner apron under the hood  small plate about 4" x2" ) will tell you exactly what it is   :yesnod:

Hide a way headlights are a good thing when it comes to 3rd gen Chargers.

Sounds like the deal of a lifetime.  Like was said, get some pics, data plate, etc  and we can sort it out for ya.  If it has the factory rear sway bar it's a rallye.

Ok, sounds like a 73 or 74 the vin will tell you.  Try googling pics for 73 charger rallye and I think you will have a match. Externally 74s are very close  Let us know.

Why is that jb?
Hide a way headlights are a popular upgrade for the other 3rd gen Chargers.  Power bulge hood, air grabber hoods, and R/T taillights are also very popular add ons for 3rd gens as well.

First off, welcome to the site. Good people here, and a few knowledgeable ones also. ;)

Great story. $400 is nothing for a running 3rd Gen Charger. Nothing. As another has said in this thread, change all the fluids and go through the mechanicals/consumables to get her street legal. You have something special.

Your friendship with this elder gentleman should be your primary focus. His life and experiences are inextricably tied to these cars. Learn all you can about them and him; you and your son will be the better for it. Oh, and post pics and any additions to your saga. We love to read about these cars, their histories and continuing paths through our lives.

... But then again, the way he talks in circles sometimes makes me wonder about that. He showed me pictures of kids, told me he had two, but that was at his house, tonight at my house, he said he had no kids, so I really don't know what to do.

Crazy stories can be part of the aging territory.  I take them at face value and then see if I can figure intent.  If it is benign and just part of being scatterbrained, there is no problem with it at all.  I got about 20 years to go before I start in similar circles myself.  Esp. about the charger.

You can use websites like Photobucket, or you can load them up in your Paint program on your computer, and resize them to where they're below 200KB.  You also have to give each picture a unique name that no one else has thought of yet.  Then, you can attach them to your regular post.
