Hello,

In my 70' charger I have a 440 with 4 barrel edelbrok carb and Holley intake. I was thinking about up-grading my camshaft and was wondering if anyone runs a mopar performance purple cam. I was thinking of going with the 474 lift and 280 duration. How does it work for you, any advice...?

Thanks

474 is a decent cam works well , reasonable idle & power

I'm running a 484/292  purpleshaft  in my 383  and it seems to work really well  with an Edelbrock 1405 carb and Performer manifold (dual plane)....I am using the 906 heads as well....just for the record.  Ive upgraded from points to the mopar electronic ignition package which was a big improvement as well, but I plan to get an MSD system on it before summertime.   The purpleshafts  are designed for Mopars, of course....mine has a moderate lope to it at idle....and great response!!

MOPARHOUND!

If you are running factory manifolds (or with headers for that matter), the Crower 271 HDP would be a good canidate.

Another that is surprising in a mild 440 build-up is the larger of the Summit (Crane is said to grind them) cams. It is ground on a 114 lsa for good idle, and has 282/292 total duration, 224/234 duration @ .050, with .465"/.488" lift - about $99 for cam and lifters to your door.

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."
