Hey guys,

So we're making the most out of our General Lee when possible and had it out over Summer, but now we're looking at buying a '77-78 Trans Am as well, either already converted or needing to be converted to a Bandit replica. The problem is, I can't find the information anywhere... maybe I'm just not looking hard enough? The important information like where we buy the exact decals from and wheels (type and correct size used in the movie) are the most important things of course!

Help us out, please!

Cheers

I don't really know a lot about them but It seems like I read somewhere that it was a 76 with a 77 front clip? Maybe I'm making that up and it doesn't matter  :shruggy:
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

We'll do our best to work with a '77-78 and just get the correct decal set/fresh lick of paint if required! The wheel sizes are my main concern at this point, as they sell those Snowflake rims in 15", 17" and also 18". I'm surprised it's so hard to find what size rims were on the movie cars!

I'd bet money on them being 15's. 17's and 18's were basically unheard of In the 70s.

from Wikipedia

Hal Needham saw an advertisement for the soon to be released 1977 Pontiac Trans Am and knew right away that would the be the Bandit's car, or actually a character in the movie is how Needham referred to the Trans Am. Needham contacted Pontiac and an agreement was made that four 1977 Trans Ams and 2 Pontiac Bonnevilles would be provided for the movie. All four of the cars were badly damaged during production,[5] one of which was basically totaled during the jump over the dismantled bridge. The Trans Am used for the dismantled bridge jump was equipped with a booster rocket, the same type which was used by Evel Knievel during his failed Snake River Canyon jump. Hal Needham served as the driver for the stunt (standing in for Reynolds) while Lada St. Edmund was in the same car (standing in for Sally Field during the jump). By the end of the movie the final surviving Trans Am and Bonneville were both barely running and the other cars had become parts donors to keep them running. <Smokey and the Bandit Special Edition DVD, Special Features "Smokey and the Bandit, the making of"> The Burdettes' car is a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible in 'Candy Red' color scheme, and is seen briefly at the beginning of the movie, and as Bandit, Snowman and Frog make their escape in the final scene

Could always watch the movie to pic out details. Cars were delivered as stock Trans Ams. Just duplicate what the factory did.

Not even close.

It was a hacked together piece of shit with a monkey head on the hood. :eek2:

Buy the movie, watch, freeze frame and collect the details - you will probably spot differences between the 4 cars used, then you can decide which you'd like to recreate.

this pic shows 15x7.0" wheels & blackwall tires -  :scratchchin: was GOODYEAR or UNIROYAL blacked out for the promotional pic  :shruggy: .....  I guess we'll have to watch the movie.  :eek2:

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm just about to order a set in the figment you posted, 6bb  :2thumbs: definitely needs some white lettering tyres though! I've even got the genuine licensed decal set just a click away!

I'd watch the movie - PONTIAC made those wheels 15x8.0" also with the WS6? suspension package - the car on the cover may just be a "photo-op".

Here's the 8" versions with the extra-lip.

The trans am on the first movie had 15x7 inch wheels. It didn't have the chrome outer lip.  Some of the details that I know the cars had was the goldish colored dash face, and of course the cb antenna mounted in between the t-tops.  I think the trans ams had some kind of a factory cb if I'm not mistaken...  But that may have been on specific models only...
