Most car wheels used to be made from steel. Trucks still use steel wheels in HD applications, but most cars have aluminum wheels today.

The wheels I mount my snow tires on for my '10 Challenger are steel.  They look great with the chrome mini-dog dish centre caps.

Stealing wheels has been going on for as long as cars have been on the road. Sucks for that  Vette dude cuz I suspect those a pretty 'spensive ones to replace.

The OP wrote STEELING wheels. I was having fun with the misspelling.

Oh, I get that. I'm not sure why we would care about some wheels jacked from a new Vette to begin with unless its an effort to enlist us in looking out for them.

I used to live in Northern Va. and one day driving through Arlington there was a cops car up on cinder blocks missing their wheels.

I remember when I was a kid, the RCMP in Kamloops got a Camaro. They called it the Interceptor. It was supposed to allow RCMP to catch speeders on the coquihalla highway.

Anyways within the first week the wheels were stolen right off the car, right in the RCMP parking lot. Seems they were some expensive wheel that was hard to find our something. Either way the car sat there on the blocks the thieves used for a couple more weeks until replacements came.

Camaro looked like the one below:
