seen all the posts about cars being written off by deer ,made me wonder why you don't have more "bars " on your cars where deer are a problem  ,

like we have here where roo's are a problem    :scratchchin:   a few pics to illustrate what I'm talking about ,notice that they are sedans  not 4WD's

                                                            just a though     :shruggy:

As common as deer strikes are, the odds of actually hitting one are fairly low.  I've drove the same route for 15 years, and hit my first one on that route earlier this year.  Some people just have bad luck and hit more than others.  As far as the brush guards on our vehicles, you'll mostly find them on 4 wd. trucks, suv's, and semi's.  But, even these won't save your vehicle from a moose or elk.

yeah they don't keep a steer/bullock  out of the window either, but they would keep those smaller deer that I'm seeing lodged in grills out  :yesnod:

they are approx. the same weight /mass as a large red kangaroo( 120-200 lb.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_kangaroo  )  and they stop them,  you   might need to hose off the car afterwards   :eek2:

but would save the rad etc   :scratchchin:

Because they're ugly?!? I live in an area that's practically overrun with deer and have never hit one. Came close a few times. For the most part, as long as it doesn't come through the glass and decapitate me I'd rather take my chances than drive around with one of those giant bars on front. I even took the one off of my 4x4. I don't know about roos but deer have long spindly legs and tend to jump when scared and a low car will just take out their knees/ankles. A Death Race style wire mesh cage over the windshield would be better. I have a truck that was hit, not once, but twice within a week in the driver's fender/door (previous owner) so a bar wouldn't help there. A friend of mine had one basically dive through the open side window. How does your insurance deal with them over there? Maybe that's why people feel the need for more/better protection?

They look best on cop cars.  :Twocents: :Twocents:

What Troy said. Where I'm at, most deer hits tend to be windshield level on cars.

:shruggy:  I was just going off all the photo's posted of deer imbedded in the grills of cars    :scratchchin: and the bars DO stop that happening

haven't seen any with them through the windscreen ,  roos "hop" by nature so they do the jump even more so than a deer  but they go over or hit the bar  :Twocents:

could it  be a difference in driving styles /speed , as I've seen a few doco's where people driving over there from overseas complain about the low speed limits in the states,  where as over here most country roads are posted 100 kmh(60 mph)  so maybe they don't get that chance to jump   :shruggy:

as far as "ugly"  could also be a culture thing   :scratchchin:    as we are used to seeing cars, utes and 4wd's with them and have done so for decades . so they are everywhere including city's

again it was just a thought    :scratchchin:

A quick Google search come up with these:

To get an idea of how high these critters jump:

From what I've seen, that's not photo chopped.

Here's a moose, already loaded up:

how much does a moose weigh ?  :scratchchin: those bigger deer /moose are on par with hitting a steer/ bullock  , you ain't getting  away  from that without damage

the major auto makers over here  offer roo  bars straight from the factory  ( the red one   :yesnod:)

do you get to keep the dead deer as spoils of war  ;)

Where I'm at you can keep a road kill hit, if you advise the local sheriff of the incident.

Think you would probably need to tell the insurance company too?
Maybe the windshield repair man as well???

And that Moose's NUTs are real close to where ya head woudda bin!

Define "country road". Here in Ohio, Interstate speed limits are 70, 65, or 55 mph depending on how close you are to the city, state highways (mostly 2 lane) are 55, and most "back roads" are 45 unless you're going through a small town. Assume most of the traffic is going about 10 mph faster than the "limit". We have lots of trees and corn so, most of the time, there's only a few feet of visible area off to the side of the road. Deer will come out of the trees/brush at a dead sprint. Not much you can do about that! Of course, we're allowed to hunt them to help control the population.

It is not (generally) advised to eat road kill. Primarily because the impact damage can explode the organs (getting all sorts of nasty stuff in all the other parts) and bruises the meat. I guess if you lop the head off one with your mirror you'd be ok. Any side impact at a decent speed wouldn't leave much for eating.

Deer here average about 100 pounds. When I was in Utah I had an Isuzu Trooper and came across a Moose running down the highway. It was easily as large as my vehicle! Moose can be 7' tall, over 1,500 pounds, with antlers in the 6' range. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose#Size_and_weight

our interstate highways are generaly 110 kmh or 100 kmh    , city streets are 40 or 60 kmh the backroads (country) can vary from 80 kmh to "unrestricted " depending on which state your in .

"  Australian states and territories use two "default" speed limits. These apply automatically in the absence of 'posted' speed restriction signage. The two default speed limits are:
within built-up areas, 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph), except for the Northern Territory which remains at 60 kilometres per hour (37 mph)
outside built-up areas, 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph); two exceptions are Western Australia and the Northern Territory at 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph)"

And because moose are so tall, when you travel at night you won't see the one standing on the highway staring at you until it comes through the car.  All your headlights are pointing at are those puny stick they stand on, the other 99% is above your illuminated zone.
