Ill be running 295/50-15 maybe even 325 which gives the tire another inch taller on my 72. using a 727 street car to burn tires off and some long cruises. ill be running the stock 400 but she will be modified soon after. Im thinking 3.55 or 3.73 on my 8.75 489 rear. Any thoughts?

I have 295/50-15`s and 3.55 gears with a 4 speed in my 72 . Great around town , but on a long trip maybe a little much . That being said , have 3 inch ex with 40 series flowmasters and no tails . 3.23 3.55 are supposed to be a good balance between off the line performance and highway cruising .

depends on your cam\converter and overall build. if you want an 80mph highway cruiser then stick with the 3.23's and build the engine around that theory

Very good points here!

A 3.55 or 3.73 you would not notice a difference between those two but you will sacrifice highway cruising with them.

THIS.  Selecting gears is as much about your engine setup and desired behavior from the car as it is anything else.  Pick the wrong ratio for your cam and converter and you'll have a dog of a car...

yeah i see your point. i have a 41 case ill probably run with its 3.23 for awhile and see how i like it and it will on a stock 400 and converter.
