Does someone knows anything about this car? It´s being called the Mistery GTX, and it was claimed that Mr Norms used to own it, there is a video of a third owner claiming it was restored to factory specs, with a 461 CID engine, and in the video, it was also mentioned that one of the former owners ran 217 MPH with it, and he himself got to "only" 180, seems a bit strange, never heard anything like it before! What do you guys think? Is it possible that it was a special delivered car? Maybe dealer installed (Mr Norms was mentioned as being the first owner)? A secret prototype engine? Or is just marketing bullshit? Please let me know.

The video is attached below:

Mr Norm Kraus owned Grand Spaulding DODGE, Not Plymouth. No matter how similar the Dodge and Plymouth car lines were, they were still sold at different dealerships.

He owned a dealership but had a Performance Shop. There have been a couple examples of Plymouths that went through his performance shop. There was a Duster and Belvedere station wagon even. Any car that went through his Performance shop received the Mr Norms decal.

In the comments section of the video, the uploader told that it was at some point Mr Norms personal Cars, but that engine question is really puzzling me, a 461? 217 mph? Is it possible? I did a search and I found very little, basically this video and a couple of message boards, could it be a secret experimental engine or a backdoor option kind of deal? I think it is possible the owner are just making this stuff up, but can´t know for sure.

Don't know anything about that car but how about some bench racing;

The summers brothers took a stock 1966 Hemi belvedere and by swapping to a numerically lower gear set in the 8.75 diff. They managed to get that car to 156 mph at bonneville.

I do not how different a drag coefficient the GTX would be to the 66 but I assume it was not vastly superior in the areo dept.

Car and driver tried to get one of those mid eighties firebird to 200mph and realized they needed over 600 hp to get it there.

The new charger hellcat gets to 204mph with 707 hp.

So how huch hp you think it would take to get the GTX to 217mph? ;)

My toghts exactly, I don´t think the drag coefficient on a 68 GTX would be a lot different than a 66 Belvedere, and that top speed number seems fishy for me, but since it was claimed by a previous owner, that´s not the guy´s fault. But if that was in fact a experimental engine, maybe it could be pushing a serious HP number, I usually don´t believe these kind of claims, but how about the 461 that was engraved on the block? It sure made me intrigued.

myk

If 200+ speeds were possible with the bodies of GTX's, Charger's, etc, then Chrysler never would have developed the Daytona and the Superbird.  Even then, don't those cars max out at about 200?  No way a stock body'd B body can pull that off.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Yep, pretty clear that part was exagerated, 217 is a hard number to come by even by today´s standards.

frame off restoration.  :smilielol:

Yep, that was priceless,  :smilielol:

The hood is also way off (for a 68), and painted car color, they mention in the video the car had a Holley 3 barrel too. This car is looking more and more fishy, maybe someone just put a Stroker engine in there and called it as original. Thanks for the replies!!!  :2thumbs:  :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

No 200, no 180, and no factory 461.  I call BS on all of it and even question whether it was "owned" by Mr. Norm.  Possibly traded in there but without documentation I say he bought the decal at a swap meet.  :icon_bs:

Yep, think you are right, it is a little strange that the video with the allegations was made during an event, he was possibly looking into raising the hype, to try and sell it for the big bucks. Even the guy who shot the video didn´t want to commit to what the owner is saying. Nevertheless, aside for the go-wing, the car looks cool, but seems there´s nothing special on it. I was looking onto some builder´s websites, and seems some offer a stroked 440 to 464 CID, maybe that is what happened, the guy slapped a stroker on it.
Ghoste long time we don´t talk, how is everything?

Sure are a lot of "1 of none" cars pop up around Barrett Jackson time huh?  ::)
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Cooter

My brother hadda 69 R/T Charger back in HS. A buddy kept going on and on about how he did a "buck fiddy" in his pos 68 Mercury Cougar. So my brother being the put up or shut up type, he gets him in the car.
runs it up to around 100 mph on the primaries,  then asks him "so you were doin a 150 mph huh"?
Lays into it. I'm in the back seat. We hit around 130-135 mph and he asks him in the pass. Seat "how fast now"?

He states "bout 130."

My brother says watch this. Takes steering wheel and turns it 1/4 turn each way and car never steered.
I told him to set it back on the road and lemme out. I call bullsh*t.

Factory autometer tach screwed to the dash.... special copo 461...... wow.... these guys are nuts.....

I had my charger up to around 100 once when I was about 17. Got on the brakes then, took both lanes to keep it in the road. Granted it had worn out steering and suspension, but still these cars are not 200mph street screamers.   :o.  Maybe he got this car confused with a viper or Ferrari.   :slap:   :smilielol:

150+ mph in a mostly street trim b-body does not seem logical, let alone 217 mph  :shruggy: Im sure anyone whose taken one of these cars much past 100 will agree that it's really just not going to happen without some MAJOR aero/motor/suspension work  :icon_smile_blackeye:

The fastest I could push my charger was 130, mildly warmed up 400 with about 10 miles of really flat open highway...pretty fun at the time but it felt like you were floating and the doors sounded like they were going to be sucked off the side of the car

I had mine to 130 with a mild 440 and 3.55 gears. With the new 493 and a set of 2.76s, the car should be capable of 175 or more, right?
