A Taiwanese flight carrying 58 people crashed today shortly after taking off from Taipei, killing at least 19 people and leaving 24 missing.

More than half of the passengers aboard TransAsia flight were from China and the death toll was expected to rise as rescue crews cleared Keelung River.

This is the airline's second crash in a year.

It was an ATR-72

QuoteAn archive recording of the communications between the pilots and controllers on the ground reveal and the pilots declare an emergency at 23:25 when they broadcast that one of their engines had quit. The control tower continues to try and reach the aircraft with no success.

A series of images caught on dashcam show the aircraft initially at level flight and then banking hard in what appears to be an attempt to make an emergency landing in the Keelung River in Taipei, away from buildings and to save innocent lives. The bank angle might have been exacerbated by the power losses on one side from the failed engine.

Wonder if their was anyone in the cab other than the driver?

I thought they could still fly on 1 engine...

They can.
Full throttle on the good one, change the prop pitch on the failed one, and adjust for the yaw.
He didn't do one of those quickly enough.

I heard there were a couple people injured in the cab.

Its easy to say, but from the looks of it he had it. Coming in low but level, then almost to miss the van a huge left turn?

Pretty interesting to read the comments in the link I posted. Lots of pilots/aviation people with possible explanations - including some very technical stuff I had to google to even grasp the concept - about the type of plane, its capabilities, and what the pilots may or may not have been doing. Obviously it's all speculation and conjecture, but interesting nevertheless.

Engines are rated to the point that if one fails at V-1 (speed at which is too fast to abort takeoff,) the other will provide sufficient power to clear a 50' obstacle at the end of the runway.

The pilot is to be commended... more loss of life would have occurred on the ground had he not taken the action he did.

What a horrendous last few seconds for all on board.
