side marker lights?

Has anyone else had trouble fitting their new side marker light into their new AMD sheet metal? I bought new lights from classic industries and they seem to be to big for the holes in the amd fenders and quarters, my old lights don't fit either. My car has quite a few coats of custom candy paint on it and I wondered if the clearances were so close that the paint has closed up my holes a few mils and thus the problem? Anyone else ever faced this headache? Hate to open the holes up thru my new paint . But looks like it-  :brickwall:

Yeah sounds like paint build up, How much bigger are the markers to the holes, like 1/16th? I just stuck trim pieces back on a freshly painted car, and i had to go with a tiny round file in about 40 holes  :brickwall:

Are you talking '69 sheet metal?!  And are you referring to quarter panels?! Is there a difference between '69 & '70 side marker size on quarter panels other than '69 being body color and '70 being chrome?  Of course the front is completely different I know, but am curious about the rear being the same or different!

I really hope I don't have this problem when my car returns from the shop...  :scratchchin:

Jeff , yours a 68 right , i think there talking about the reflecter housing , recesses into body
build up of paint , makes them stick out, not fit properly
yours are round , the only trouble you will have is paint on inside to get ground to bezel for lights to work

I didn't know if they were talking about just the '69's reflectors, or any side marker on an AMD panel.

The paint buildup around the round edges should be a fairly easy fix to take care of.

Sorry, my Charger is a '68. I broke my car's paint's virginity putting the screws in the gas cap on the other day finally, some of the paint in the holes as the screws went in opened up so now I "may" not feel so bad about opening up the holes to fit the lights. I haven't brought myself to drilling the doors for the Hemi emblems. Anyone know of any "stick on" instead of "drill holes in my new door" emblems? The holes should of been drilled before paint but got missed.  If I wind up opening up the holes for the lights, as it seems I'm gonna have to, should I put some sort of sealer on the filed edges? I'm sure it's have to opened up thru the paint to the metal on some of the edges, what could I dob on to seal it?

With just a little filing I got all of the side marker lights in tonight. I don't think I broke through the paint in any of the light holes. very happy to have this one behind me.

Do what I do, you will find this issue at door locks, maybe  door handles ?
I always get left over paint when spraying car , good for touching up stone chips later too,
Any trim holes , a good rtv silicone where you drill paint ,
Or if your fussy , file to fit then use touch up paint , come back and re fit emblems once touch up dry
None of us like breaking new paint to fit things,

:o Look at the paint pattern. Do you have some more pics of that? :coolgleamA:

All of those holes should be opened up prior to final paint so all thats on them is sealer, paint, and clear.

The paint has a "sunlight on water" effect.

interesting thoughts. actually I think it looks like broken tempered glass. The lace was the hardest thing to find, picking the colors was a huge project as well, but without the randomness in this pattern, it didn't have the same effect. we tried a bunch of different patterns and were happily surprised when the one the daughter liked proved to be perfect. Lots of time at fabric stores hanging with the ladies looking for just the right stuff. Lots of funny looks as I told them what I was looking for, when they asked if they could help me find anything. You can see a pattern in the bigger pic, but it's a random as I could find. some of these pics are obviously before sanding.  I hope to have the car at Mopars in the Park in late May

I saw a show not to long ago that showcase this technique. First time I have seen any car with it. It will be an eye catcher.... :D :yesnod:

That is one wild looking paint scheme.  Any chance of a full Pic?

The car isn't done yet and I've been trying to hold off showing off the whole thing. With the web these days I don't want to see my car before I get it done, if you catch my meaning. It's a combination of Bob Bannings Challenger Funny Car, Dick Landy's '68 Charger Super Stock and a lil Imperial Kustoms charger. Lots of silver, greens, candy and lace. I started building this car Feb 2011, it's been a slow process. I'll get another pic or two up to keep you entertained :-)
