Look for a casting number on the side,
The last three digits tell you us what it is , 742 is correct for 68 isn't it hard to tell ,
Trac lock centre, steel clutches, not the lazy sure grip tye ,
There's a good chance it's still in it
At least you don't have to pull much apart to start,
On a jig already ? I think this one is in good hands  :2thumbs:
.

Thanks! I'll check it after work today

Hi Pat,

I'm in the UK, unfortunately for you...sunny England on Sea near France.
On a small Island of Sheeps, in the land of Kent, once owned by King Henry the 8th.
The first ever UK flights were done here by Mr. Charles Stewart Rolls in 1909...
Sorry going off track there for a moment.

It cost me a fortune to ship this stuff from Long Beach LA and it was dear to buy in California.
But if you want rustfree oem Sheetmetal, you have to go there for the best parts....

All the parts you need to rebuild the rearend will be from AMD anyways.
Order the whole lot in one hit and fit it on as one complete unit.
Quarters, rear framerails, trunk floor and extensions, tail-light panel with lower valance.
Whilst your doing all that the Wheel houses are a doddle too....

Sounds hard but I can assure you its not, just look at the pictures of the Mr.Norm C500...

Oh yes and a box full of FLANGE CLAMPS too..........

Thanks!

500Jon

Easy peasy lemon squeasy...

Oh yes, a good pair of undamaged doors to align the quarters with...

It sounds like you have the skills, tools, compassion, knowledge and desire to complete this job.

x2  :iagree:

Don't let the naysayers bring you down. Follow your dream. If this is what YOU want to do, then DO IT.
Anyone that looks at this like they're going to make money off building one of these cars are kidding themselves anyway, no matter what they start with.

Thanks guys. Not sure I'll be able to buy 1/4s before I put the rails in. Not sure I have the $$ to buy both 1/4s, rear valance, both outer wheel tubs and right inner tub, left trunk gutter and trunk floor drop offs etc. Going to try and start getting parts again soon. I bought all new front and rear rails, torsion and rear crossmembers inner and outer rockers, front and rear leaf spring perches and floorS. Don't need to piss the wife off too much lol.

Wow cool story, so glad you are attempting to rescue that car. It somehow survived this long being forgotten, it will be awesome to see you bring it back. Congrats on the find!

Pretty much the point the "naysayers" were making.
Please don't spend a nickel on it until you have a title.

F8-4life

Just think about the look you will get from people when you finish the car and can tell people your story.
"yea I got it for free..found it in the woods"

Agreed! All the parts I had already for my xp29 so I'm still building one out of the two chargers, the satellite and new metal one way or another. It's all in the starting point. I. Sure I can get a title it's just finding out the process. That's if the owner prior to the family member can't get one. The way I see it is DMV ca t find it in. Their records because it's entered into the system on digit wrong. The guy who fies file has been wiped of all information. So if the previous owner gets the DMV to search his history and it shows up a 1969 charger he may be able to get title as he is last known registered owner. Then he signs it and I pay him for his trouble and voila I have a title. So when I go I. To title it in my name I show them the actual vin and get then to get it changed to match ( happens all the time in newer cars I see for safely inspections).

The numbers on the centre section housing are looks like maybe "L28" that is small and "2881489"

JB400

You have the 489 center section, which is a good thing.

ill take your word for it lol, the car was special ordered that I know. its the rear end a sure grip? trac loc? i really dont know much about them so you guys will have to educate me lol.

Ghoste

The 489 casing was the standard 8.75 for 1969 but the Sure Grip would still be optional to it even though it's the 8.75.  The only way to tell is to test it and the only way to know if it had it originally is with the build sheet or sales paperwork.

Pat1973charger

I know the history back to the original owner who was an older lady. Everyone says it's original rear end that used to hang around with the two guys that owned it after the lAdy. The car was taken off the road somewhere around 77-78 so it had a short driving career.

fy469rtse

Take diff apart, photos of gear side of centre, the guys are right 489 the strongest , except the Dana
Get a factory manual for frame reference measurements , start setting it up,
Plenty to do in between buying panels, keep at it , don't burn yourself trying to do too much too quickly
Great find , keep the faith  :2thumbs:

Someday I will split it. I have the frame specs
, used them to build the jig

Baldwinvette77

That'll buff right out, Assuming you use a sledgehammer for buffing like i do  :smash:

Pat1973charger

Funny you say that baldwinvette, I'm in the middle of all this mess on the east coast and I watched a women with a new Chevy cruise shovelling her car off yesterday with an aluminum shovel...hope it's not a lease    ;D

Ghoste

She'll likely try to claim the damage through insurance.  ::)

rarefish

Just got done reading this entire thread....Wow...I will admit that I'm on the side of the crowd that thinks that this car is just too far gone.  I also noted that you are the same age as my son. He grew up around  A,B, E-bodies that I have owned over the years and he never took an interest in any of them. That has always been kind of a disappointment to me.  I could never get him to help me in the garage while he was still living at home. So it looks like you have all the energy and desire in you that he never had.   Well good luck making this project happen.

500Jon

Sons can be very disappointing indeed!
My Mum and Dad wanted me to be a Surveyor?
Not sure why, so I signed up for sixth grade, to keep her happy.
The last day of term I got suspended and never went back.
I did a five year apprenticeship as a 'Machine tool rebuilder'.
Was Ok until the 80's and then no one in the Uk wanted machine tools anymore...so I went into the car trade.
I should have gone back to school and did my punishment, now I'd be rich and not do Car-stuff LOL!!!

My friend in LA lucked into a mint 1971 GTX in Sassy Grass, just like mine...(except mine is a Canadian rust-bucket).
He said he was selling it cheap, as he was fed up trying to get his SON to help him finish her!
She was totally rustfree, fresh paint, rebuilt engine and trans, just needed a weeks work to get her running...
The poor man was devastated at letting her GO...
Why wasn't he MY DAD... I would have done anything to get that car, and his SON could have had it for FREE!!!

Kids EH??? :slap: :slap: :slap:

I'm up for the challenge lol. I hope that my son will take and interest and help me. I feel as though it was the best bonding I had with my dad growing up.

Pat1973charger

DMV called me today and asked me to send a signed letter from the current home owner where I got the car stating that he inherited the car when he bought the property and he was giving it to me. A photo of the VIN plate, a copy of the decoded VIN and a writeup on the while situation.

Ghoste

So all good right?  They aren't going to issue a provincial VIN and make you put it on are they?

Sent all the documents and photos off yesterday, we will see what they say. I stated in the letter that I wanted a title for the vin on the dash not a provincial tag as the value of the car lies in the vin. I will let you guys know how it goes. Let's all pray lol.
