What's worse? 9 out of 10 landings at Birmingham are like that.

There was a Japanese airport that was worse than Birmingham. The Japanese though closed it after a few close calls and built a whole new airport.

It's what happens when the runways were built due to space confines instead of taking wind patterns into account.

Any landing you can walk away from, is a good one :2thumbs:

Wicked video!

I recall reading about another airport that was like that but also had to contend with skyscrapers as the planes approached.  I am thinking Hong Kong but not 100% sure.

Nice Landing!!!

I think Gibraltar is one of the worst?
Built behind a windy mountain and out into the sea...
Good idea NOT!!! :rotz: :rotz: :rotz:

That landing was a very close call.

I believe that in some cases, but there are times when the wind goes where it wants. North, S.E and West.

I watched that link you gave. Sorry, but no comparison.

LOL...I've flown into Toncontin a lot...in the distant past....it's not scary in the back where you can't see what's going on...lol...it's still active but they they cut the top off the mountain that used to be on the approach so it's no where near as bad now.....
I have flown into Shemya on Reeve's Aleutian Airways ...sideways, when I looked out my window I was looking straight down the runway then just before the wheels hit the pilot jerks the plane straight and just lets it drop before the wind can catch it not a little planes..a 737.....scares the livin crap out of you....

wasn't there a road/highway (at Toncontin) so close to the end of the runway that they had a stop light to stop traffic every time a plane was landing just in case?

What is up with the roller coaster tarmac in Birmingham. Not only do they have the crosswinds, but you have to time the set down perfectly with the rollers or risk slamming into  the uphill side.  GEEZ!

They always claimed the hard bank out of Washinton National was to avoid the Washington monument.   That was a joke, right?

Staring at the neon sign (on top of the hotel) on the way into San Deigo always troubled me. :P

Wow!! Excellent landing by excellent pilot.
Since we're talking about bad ones, the old Keflavik NAS about 40 clicks south of Reykjavik Iceland was always interesting.. Winds are always 40+ knots from any direction since the darn thing was stuck out on the peninsula dead center of the North Atlantic. Even when you stuck the landing the end of the strip was a volcanic lava field full of steam vents. They don't call Iceland the land of fire and ice for nothing. Nowadays that is the international airport since NATO closed Kef.

Nope, DEFINITELY not a joke!  Don't know which runway, but if your on final approach... you essential follow the river (Potomac?)  "NO FLY" over the national monuments!  Gets really hairy, banking as much as they do, (that close to terra firma.)

I was first class on a MD-90 & rode that bronco... got over the threshold (listening for the pilot to throttle back & settle her in) and he FIREWALLS the throttles pulling us back up....

WTH? Gear indication?  Nope... I hear the gear retract.  WTH? Now I've got no idea... I've never "known" I've ridden an aborted landing!

After we've climbed back out, the pilot comes over the intercom..... "Ladies & gentlemen, we're going to go back around and try this one more time... we had a little traffic on the runway."

I got to ride that same approach the second time!

Those pilots are kinda like heart doctors....  They're not necessarily paid for "what they do," but rather "what they can get you out of!"
