Battery Tender via Cigarrette Lighter

Anyone have experience using a Battery Tender via the cigarette lighter plug?

Have typically connected the BT directly to the battery terminals.  Recently bought the cigarette lighter adapter but the unit doesn't seem to work (flashing yellow light indicating lack of connection). 

Yea, I tried wiggling it.  No luck.

Any ideas?

Silly for me to ask, but does your key need to be in the Accy position for the lighter to "see" power circuit?
