Jay Leno can eat my ass. I used to like him but his recent comments on the Bill Maher HBO show annoyed me. It showed what a hypocrite he is, spouting how unfriendly the old cars are to the environment. Idiots like him with UNlimited income can own whatever they want no matter the smog laws. The crap he was spouting shows that while he may be a car guy, he doesn't seem to car about the freedom for US to own old cars. Screw him and his fat head. He could get that noggin stuck in a 5 gallon bucket.

myk

As I've said before Jay Leno made his fortune being a whore to the media and the boob-tube masses, so as public opinion changes or moves to the latest topic of interest, he has to change with it if he wants to stay a popular relevancy.  Someone somewhere in some liberal, tree hugging think tank must've told him that these cars are destroying the planet or something.

Besides, the social elite will always be able to follow the rules they want, do what they want, because they're seen as better than the common citizen and therefore more entitled to do as they will.  Smog polluting cars? Guns? Criminal behavior and mischief?  Those are just a few perks of being at the top of the food chain.

It's good to be king, right?

Mike DC

Are you referring to the comment printed here, about the '77 Ford outgassing more while sitting still than the new Focus on the road?

http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/26440/does-an-old-car-with-engine-turned-off-pollute-more-than-a-new-car-going-60-mph

He's not wrong.

Another way to look at it would be he's praising the progress we've made over time.  That does need repeating in the media.  Plenty of Greenies gripe about how the auto industry never improves much at all.  Notice that Leno didn't compare the '77 to a new electric car, he compared it to a newer gasoline car.

Ghoste

Except that new cars outgas too, a fact he conveniently left out.

I don't see how being a comedian and getting paid well to entertain people on TV is "whoring"  :shruggy:  Leno is one of the most family-friendly comedians around and he's done way more for charity and to support the military this month alone than any of you will do in your entire lifetime.

The comments he makes about old cars polluting and such are 100% true.... is the expectation that he lie about it? Leno is a true car with gasoline for blood. He loves them all from steam cars to the aged gross polluters to super clean exotics.

How many other super-rich Hollywood types do you see at the local cruise in or tooling up and down Mulholland on Sunday afternoon?

A)  I don't know that his charitable contributions have anything to do with it or that it can be proven he's done more than anyone on this site (of course I don't know the charitable conrtibutions of anyone on this site so you could be right)
B) I still call bs on new cars not outgassing.  The new one in my driveway clouds up my windshield WAAAAY more than the old one in my garage.  Not oddly the new one has far more plastic inside it too.

I met Jay at the Spring Fling, he was in his Turbine Car!

Give him his due, he drove it THERE on the Street!!!

To me, just another ordinary Guy in a nice Mopar???

If it had been ARNIE in a Turbine Car, then we are talking serious macho LOL!!! :2thumbs:

That 2008 Challenger cost about 45 large new and is probably worth about 28-30 large today. Now he can sell it at inflated price because the money is donated to charity and at the same time take the tax deduction. What a scam.    ::)

OTOH, he has done a lot of good for the auto hobby...it's nice to have celebrities in our corner on auto issues. On other issues he's just a run-of-the-mill showbiz Liberal.

He bought the Chally from Valley Dodge 2008!

There used to be three Dodge Dealerships in 'The Valley' and now only ONE!
Jay should have gone to 'Dependable Dodge' they are still going...why???
The Boss has a 70 Chally ragtop, the staff are wonderful and Julius Steuer is a regular there.
They love Real Mopars, yep the old ones and the staff do too...

Anyone can sell you a new Car, its what the Dealership does afterwards that counts!

I don't care if he was right about the 77 Ford being more eco UNfriendly just sitting still. The man has numerous classic cars so I expect him to act more like an enthusiast. There was no benefit to car guys for him to come on the assbag Maher's show to bad mouth classic cars. Liberals often want to pass laws that they themselves will never have to deal with. I'd kick him in the pants if i had the chance.

I still think you guys are missing the bigger context of Leno's comments.

There is something to be said for not preaching to the choir.  Bill Maher's audience does not think in terms of 1970 or 2014 Challengers, they think in terms of gasoline-powered Challengers vs hybrid/electrics.  Leno's comments may be the first time they've heard someone point out that gasoline cars have improved much at all since the 1940s.

Leno was bashing old Detroit for the sake of defending modern Detroit.  If he just cheers Detroit across the board and bashes the alternatives, then a lot of that audience would write him off as a fossil-fuel-hugging dinosaur and think he's too biased to trust.  Many of those people are deeply entrenched in the other side.

He's nice guy.

I respect him, because it's admirable how someone so not funny can be so successful.

Totally agree, I don't care for Jay Leno at all. He's not even funny most of the time and pretty annoying with his overgrown chin. He probably doesn't even know which way to turn a wrench. When you're super rich like he is all you do is collect cars, you don't work on them.

He takes really good care of all his cars

when he is done with them, he donates them

Actually, Jay is pretty darn knowledgeable about ALL of his cars, and he DOES know which way to turn a wrench. I daresay, he probably knows a good deal more than many people on here, especially when you consider the WIDE WIDE breadth of vehicle types that he collects. Don't disparage him because you don't find his humor to your particular liking. He has been a real boon to the automotive community in general, and I applaud him.  Just my  :Twocents:

The little I have learned about Jay Leno over the years is that he got his car interest from a time in his life that most of us got ours.
I don't know his early history with the bug but I suspect it had little to do with money. Even if he had the means to play with cars as a teen that should not take away or dismiss his interest in the hobby.
All to often those that are financially successful need to endure the wrath of those that are not.

I like most of us played with cars from an early age and many times thought about what I would do if I had more money. How many of what kind of cars would I play with.

We see stories about collectors that seem to hoard cars of a kind and others that just buy and sell collections that few get the chance to see.

I ask those of you that have a complaint about how Jay enjoys his passion.----How would you have fun with cars if money was not an issue?

Absolutely!

Is he hurting or helping the hobby?  The latter of course!  So why persecute the guy!

Kern Dog

Like I mentioned, I used to like him. I find his TV humor relatively entertaining, but what I had a problem with was his comments on the Bill MOhair show. When a car guy of national fame goes on a bullshit hack show like that and bad mouths the old car hobby, he made a wrong move. Whether or not what he said was correct, I aim to give NO help to the environmental zealots that see every gasoline powered car as a planet killing machine. Also, I harbor no ill will to the rich. Once they try to  push an agenda to exclude the working class from a hobby so only THEY can enjoy it, they are making a wrong move. It reminds me of lawmakers that enact laws that they will never have to abide by. It is hyprocrisy at its finest.
