Hood black-out...paint on top of the clear coat??

Well life has finally calmed down enough that I can start working on getting my N96 hood on my '72.

After I paint the hood and go to spray the semi-gloss black-out area, can I  just paint right on top of the base coat or do I have to scuff the base coat? are there any time concerns??

Oh, also I was planning to just use PPG base clear and Krylon semi-gloss on top...any issues with that??

You would have to scuff paint for adhesion. If the Krylon is Laquer that would not be a good idea as it may lift? LEON.

hmmm that means a wet sand/buff afterwards  I'll ask the paint shop about the semi-gloss.

Are you repainting the gold as well, or just the black?

If just the black, mask off the gold area & sand/scuff the black area. Many options for refinishing. You could do it in single stage with SEM Hot Rod Black.
Or, if you are already using PPG black basecoat, why not use their Flex-n-Flat clear? Awesome flat clear. You can even cocktail it with other PPG clears to adjust the gloss level.

I wouldn't use Krylon spray can flat clear, either. Sounds like you are using good products so it would be a step backwards. It wouldn't hold up very long, either.

Sorry guys, the gold hood picture was just for reference, below is my "new" N96 and current hood. I'm going to paint it to match my Blue car. If I used the '71 black out I'd be fine but was going to use the '72 version which is bigger and painted.

Well there no way with the boarder stripe I could accurately scuff the paint for the blackout and not scuff the non-black out area. So only remedy I see is wet sand whole thing and buff to remove scratches from "gloss" area. Of course that will make the black out a little shiny too but there's no other way from what I can see.

Flat clear is a neat idea, I'll have to look into that!

Do like Bill said. I'd paint the blue. Wet sand & rub the blue. Then tape off where you want the black out. Scuff or sand lightly while it's taped up with 600 or 800 or gray scotch brite pad. Do not scuff/sand hard against tape because you don't want to mess up tape & have to retape. Wax & grease remove, Tack, Spray your flat black, clear with flat clear. Call it done. Heres my 72 hood.
