What's a good price for a nice dash?

A guy I know has a very nice used dash pad for a '68 Charger priced at $300. Well, it was $300 but I haven't talked to him about it lately. Is $300 about right? Is it a good deal or am I getting screwed? Seems as hard as it is to find them in good shape just about any price is cheap.

If I came across a dashpad that is nice for a 73, I'd be glad to pay someone 300 bucks.  According to YearOne, most new dashes (I don't know if they are repo's or original) sell for around 900.  I, on the other had, just payed 100 bucks for a dashcap.  Supposedly it will cover up the old dash and give it an original look.

You may want to get another opinion though.  I'm not sure what the base price would be for a 68.

I went through this not too long ago with the '69. I bought one of those flimsy repo's sight unseen and it was a total disappointment(out $180). In disgust with that I luckily found a perfect green pad at a show this spring for $200. The guy would not budge and I paid the price. I dyed it red and it looks great.

I would guess a '68 pad would cost somewhere in the range you are talking as they are a little less common as it is a one year only piece.

I bought a repo upper dash pad, had it dyed the correct color put it in and its a flimsy
POS, I will never buy another repo dash pad only original. That is not a bad price if it is sweet.......

I will, hopefully in another month it will be closed to finsih.  The bodywork and interior that is.  Then all that is left is to fix the tranny and inspect the engine

I paid $250 for mine in VERY NICE conditions on ebay... including shipping to Miami, and map light insert... oh well I suposse I was lucky also. 3rd gens dash are more expensive I think since there is not repros... 2nd at least have repros available ( even BS pieces )

But I think $300 is a very nice price

just dashes wants 500 bucks to re do a third gen dash! i put a cap on mine,70 bucks from legendary,and its pretty good as far as i m concerned

I think that $300 is a good price for the used pad as long as its in good condition,remember this is a one year fit.But you can always have your original re-done but it will probably be more money than the used one

Especially places where the adhesive may be failing on your installation or areas that need special attention.

I am going from a saddle to black interior, did you paint the frame? Is the Black (if yours is black) paint a semigloss or gloss?

Hey Beer, Here are some pics of my dashcap on my 72. I bought the cap for $15.00 from a friend, he did not have the adhesive. I used contact cement.
The first thing you need to do is clean the dashpad and make sure you don't leave any residue from the cleaner. My dash was cracked real bad, you have to take a razor knife and cut back the edges of the cracks so there are no high spots or ridges, you want the cap to make contact at all points. I had to cut out for the map light and switch. Since this is a driver I wasn't concerned about an exact match on the paint. I bought a small rattle can of plastic paint at VIP, don't laugh, it hasn't faded or peeled, you can also buy it at PEP Boys. After applying several layers of contact cement I installed the cap, this is a good spot to have a second pair of hands to help place the cap on right. After I pressed it on firmly I stacked a bunch of magazines/catalogs across the top of the dash for 48 hours. Also cut some boards and had them pressing against the cap to ensure a tight seal. The end result is the cap is not a perfect fit. I think that after 30 years the original dashpad has grown in a few spots, shrunk in some others. Also the cap came loose on the top side after 2 years, I took some phenoseal, applied it to a hacksaw blade and stuck the hacksaw blade under the cap to spread out the phenoseal. I was afraid if I tried to remove the cap that parts of the dashpad would come off with it.
From the pics you can see that the cap doesn't fit perfect, worse spot is where the pad meets the radio speaker cover, also the ends are short by 1/4". I plan to eventually get a new dashpad , but that's on my "C" list (I'll see if I ever get to it).

How far are ya from the Epping Dragway? I may be taking my other car (Charger is disassembled) there to see what it will run in the 1/4 mile 29 Oct. I would love to see your car, the interior looks great for a daily driver! Doing Oxford (likely hooking up with jimshine and checking out his GLee) and the 1/8 mile 22nd.

I will start a Dashpad thread when I am done and we can delete the dashpad stuff here, as not to highjack the thread and move the dashpad stuff from that one.

Don't worry, NH, I wouldn't exactly call that a hyjack.

I did find another guy selling a "nice" '68 B-body OE dash pad for $150 but I've yet to hear back from him. Are all the B-body dash pads the same in '68?
