I picked this 727 trans up yesterday for $100
PK 4028 412 5652 6295

Think its out of a 76
Need it for my 440

Should work correct?

PK 4028 412 5652 6295

PK= Plant Kokomo

4028412= A 727 from a 1977 400-2

5652= Build date January 17, 1977

6295= Sequence number, the 6295th built that day

The partial VIN stamped in the raised pad on the right side of the bellhousing will give a clue as to what kind of car it came from.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks!!

This should work with my 440 then?

John_Kunkel

It'll bolt up to a 440 but the internals are on the weak side due to the fact the 400-2 was down on power compared to an earlier 440.

I was going to have it rebuilt. Suggestions on what to replace? Engine should be upwards of 600HP and 600 TQ

John_Kunkel

The front clutch will probably be 3-disc instead of 4 and the kickdown band lever will be 2.9 and should be changed to at least a 3.8. The planetaries will be 3-pinion which will bother some but the 3-pinions are actually stronger than the 4-pinion in the weak spot.

The front clutch drum can be machined for a fourth clutch or simply replaced (preferably by billet) and the aluminum front planetary can be replaced with steel.

If you want all the tricks you can easily spend over $2500 on parts alone. I'd contact John Cope at CPR and have him build the best unit for your app.
