Anyone added a 3rd brake light to their Charger?

I am planning on driving my 70 a lot more since I've dialed most bugs out of it, and recently started thinking about some safety upgrades.

A third brake light would be easy and quick to add, and possibly save me from being rear ended one day. EBay is full of universal ones. I'm sure I can find a bright one that isn't too visible when parked.

Anyone have one on their car? Any pics of the finished install? I'm thinking about a slim, low profile one mounted inside the rear glass.

I put one on my 72 since that's the one I drove the most (30k miles in 12 years) until this year. I bought an el cheapo unit from J.C. Witney. It's a stick on unit that I mounted just above the package tray.

Sorry but PLEASE NO!!!  Try led tail light bulbs or something. I hate them to begin with, but on a Charger is vandilizim. jmo. MPJ

Snatched this one off of an LKQ trunk lid. Mid 2000s Deville I think. I haven't installed it yet but if I do I think at the bottom of the rear glass would be good.

I've been thinking of doing one.  I've been picturing a long thin line across the top of the rear window.  It's the highest feasible place to put it without adding something on the roof.

These days the average driver's line of sight is higher up than ever before.  The stock taillights on our old cars are getting downright low & dim compared to what people are used to.

JR

Exactly. And traffic moves at a much faster pace than it did when these cars were new. I cringe every time I slow down in traffic because the thought of getting rear ended after all this work is sickening. I still need to do the relay upgrade to brighten the taillights as well, but a 3rd lamp would help.

That low profile lamp is exactly what I had in mind. Not noticeable when off, but easily visible when lit.

And Moparjohn, I agree they aren't particularly pretty sitting back there, but I'd rather look at the extra light than look at this.

Digging out my Cadillac brake light inspired me to see how it might look at the bottom of the windshield  :scratchchin: This was with a 9V battery.

Unfortunately it's a must , modern drivers are conditioned to see a window mounted brake light
Not going to risk getting rear ended because the driver didn't realise I was stopping ,
Also the reason I upgrade my tail lights to LEDs ,
69 's are the worse for light reflection in housings  :2thumbs:

thanks for reminding me I thought of this long ago and then forgot about it. I also considered installing the blinkers in the back window as well. I am paranoid about being hit in the ass.

They don't see these cars on the road much , usually there too busy looking at car , in a trance
Know how I can tell , mouths are usually open , draw dropped

I hate rear-ended Chargers even more.

Thanks to the 'OP for posting this topic.  It's a wise one that may just save someone's Charger...

This is awesome. Very bright and hard to miss. Nice and slim too.

That wrecker Charger is a sad sight, but look ath the road of ice it's on!!!!  It should not have been driven that day.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I have an LED strip on the spoiler. The LED's light about 1/10 second faster than an original bulb . About 10 feet at 70 MPH. With a Black car that is not shaped like modern cars anything that helps wake up the driver  behind me is good.

It wasn't out in that weather. It was just brought out that day to get pictures taken of what happened to it.

Great thread and Safety add on.  Like the cadillac LED's :2thumbs:

I too am paranoid about getting thumped in the rear.

Or what about those idiots with cell phones that pull door to door trying to get a pic.  Swearing into your lane.  Thankfully, here in the DFW area we can pass on the right.
