Is there a registry to report  a 500 rebody if I get the VIN?

In the early/mid-80s, I saw a 500 in a junkyard that had all the numbers and 500 specific parts removed or cut off it.
Not caring about a car being rebodied back then since they weren't worth so much, I didn't think to note which trans and the stripe&body colors. By the late 80s with the jump in Mopar prices, rebodies became a concern. I tried but failed to recall the 500's colors in case I came across it again and the JY it was in had closed down and the owner moved to VA.
Well, 30 years later, one of the new guys at work happens to be the son of the JY's owner. I had him ask his dad what he recalled about it. It was black with a white stripe and he has the VIN recorded that he should be able to find!
How many X9 500s were made and is there a breakdown of stripe colors? Were they XS or XX VINs?

There any many informative posts on the 500s .They did start off as XS29 and went to XX29   http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7862.50.html

VIN numbers on 500's started of as XX. The fender tag and broadcast had XS but not the dash VIN. There are a few exceptions but they are random in the production, not in a batch.

After thinking about it, the title should say POSSIBLE rebody as I don't know if the parts were ever used on another Charger body. I hate to cast suspicion on other owners of legit X9 500s.
I notice the 500 fender tags have the V88 delete. Can you tell what color stripe they were built with?
I'll keep asking the JY owners son to have his dad try to find the VIN.

69_500

If you do find out the VIN I would make a sub note about it in my database. I do have a few in the database that are no longer with us.

Way back in the late 1970's I had a 1969 Dodge Charger 500 bought from " BIG JACKS" Junkyard. The price was $50.00 which I paid in advance. I removed the fender tag and told Jack that I would be back on Saturday with my trailer to pick up the car. It was just a body no engine, no transmission and no interior. When I returned on Saturday Jack just started shaking his head back and forth when he saw me. At his yard he had a big crane with a large steel plate that they would drop on the cars till they were flat. Then they would stack them on Jacks flatbed semi trailer. He would then drive it himself to the shredder near Chicago and make good money for himself. While he was gone with a load earlier in the week the yard help removed the door of my 500 and flattened it!@#$%^&*(!
He returned my money and I kept the fender tag. Several years later I heard of Galen Govier and his data base of Mopars. I sent him the fender tag so he could account for the 500 B5 blue with white stripe and blue interior. He got back with me and told me that at that time it was one of only 7 known 500 "SE" cars! I know a few more have turned up know but still a limited number of cars!

OMG!!!

A B5 C5oo squashed for scrap-money :brickwall:

Where's my meds, I need to lay down in a dark room! :'( :'( :'(

What is it with Junkyard Guys???
It must be a code of practice once they take a deposit! :scratchchin:

Outside my friends Autobody shop there was a bad crash with a Jensen Interceptor MK111 440ci SixPack.
It was out on a road-test without the owners permission from a mechanics shop!
It was total write-off and I found it a local yard, so I leaves deposit on it for salvageable parts.
On my return (Saturday) the whole car is gone, all I see where it was laying is a transmission.
The guy says everything on the car aws JUNK and we saved that for you??? :shruggy:

Frigging liars and thieves the lot of 'em!

This may have happened more than we like to think.  I had a chat with a guy about the C500s in the late seventies. He told me about one in a wrecking yard that he asked about. The yard owner said something like---Oh that charger?  It's one of those cheap ones with the fixed headlights. It's going to be flat next week. :eek2:

I was wondering if that one was a members car. Is is in the same condition still? Also curious if it may have come from the state of WA as I saw one similar back in the late 80's and lost track of it. It had a regular Charger flip grill installed in it at the time.

I don't see my co-worker that often, we work different shifts.

I got lucky tonight, I was getting off as he was coming in. He is going to text his dad to look for the VIN before he heads from VA to FL for Christmas.

I'm still on 'the case', hope he can find his records.
