How to instal drip rails?

I am in the process of replacing the roof skin on my 68 Charger.  My question is, how in the sequence of things do the drip rails get attached?  Are they sandwiched between the roof frame and the skin, or do they sit on top of the skin?  I am still waiting for my roof to get here, so I haven't started to remove the roof yet.  I figured I would see if you guys could save me some time?

The roof skin sits behind the drip rail on the roof supports. When you remove the seam sealer from behind the drip rail you will see the spot welds. Drill or grid those spot welds out just like you would on any other panel replacement. You will not have to remove the drip rails at all, other than the stainless trim of course.

Thank you, I actually do have to replace them, and because of the rust, I couldnt tell if they sat on top or under the roof skin. I appreciate the response. Thank you, Jon

If te drip rails are rotten be prepared for rot under them on the inner roof pillars. My 70 had to be patched both sides under the drip rail area before putting new AMD rails on.

I got lucky, the frame under the roof was perfect! Getting them out was a different story! Finding spot welds under rust is horrible!

Hi Jon

If you start at one end of a panel and tap a panel knife or strong putty knife along the seam it will show you the location of the next spot weld.  Drill that one out then tap it along to the next one and so forth. When you go to weld your new roof on make sure it is in a relaxed position and not twisted it have any torsion on it.  If it is not totally relaxed it will oilcan or have ripples.

I know this is an older thread, but an additional question is this :

Is the roof skin glued to the structure beneath it. It looks like there is some adhesive or some kind of goop between the inner structure and the skin itself.
I'm going to cut the roof skin in lots of pieces anyway and pry it off the frame structure in smaller pieces.

It's the same goo they put between the hood frame and the hood skim.  I use a dab of seam sealer to keep the ribs from vibrating on the roof.  I like to put Dynamat between the ribs to keep the interior for sounding like a beer can.
