hi. can anyone tell me if you can just change out the top plate on a 67 charger auto. console with a 68-70 charger console top plate? is that the only difference? thanks guys.... ??? ??? ???

Troy

The 68 top plate is different from 69-70 because it's "ribbed" and instead of having a woodgrain top. I believe the 67 top should be the same as a 68 top except the 67 may have holes drilled near the front for a vacuum gauge. Now, the 67 console itself is probably different since it stretched to the rear seats and has no back end. I haven't compared them personally but I know I have a 67 top plate for my 68 because the 69-70 isn't correct for me.

Close.  66 is different because it goes to the back.  67 is exactly the same as the 68-70 one except for the top plate.  It is a brushed aluminum piece on the fastbacks.  The console cover opens differently as well so you must change out the lid.
The biggest difference of all between a 67 console and a 2nd gen console though is price.  Our parts cost less even when they are the same.  Maybe not now that I let the cat out but the world is slowly figuring this out anyway.

Hmmmm, interesting. I couldn't remember which year went all the way though but I thought all 1st gens did. Learn something new every day.

I thought the 1967 model year still had the heavier fiberglass(?) console and just used the small bolt on tail section like the other 1966 non Charger B Body models.

BTW: The bolt on rear tail piece(not rear console) for the early consoles are hard to find from what I have seen.

I have one that I had in my 68 for a couple years untill I got my one piece 68 unit fixed. I have never seen
the two piece rear bolt on section break ever.

Same part number for 67, 68, and 69 (I don't have a 70 parts catalog).

A minor retraction.  Had I read a little further I would have seen that there is a separate part number for the Charger in 67 and the same number for the other B-bodies.  After checking further I find that the difference is that the Charger console has the holes cut out of the top near the front for the optional clock.  Aside from the holes, it is identical to the other B-body consoles from 67 to 70 in every way.
This is made worse because of the fact that I have the optional clock in my 67 and I have had it and the console out several times.   I have even had it sitting on the floor beside a 69 console that I have around.
The moral of the story is double check all facts.  Sorry folks.
The holes are hidden by the top plate btw so it is absolutely interchangeable.

I agree they seem much more durable than the later plastic console's. My "hard to find" comment means that usually there is a console attached so converting the more common 1st gen front and rear console's is tough.

Does anyone own a '67 with the original console? I would like to know for sure about it being the newer plastic style or not because that would make the thicker console a one year only deal and there seem to be a lot of them around.

Yes, mine has the original console and it is the thinner plastic style like the ones used in 68-70.

Thanks Ghoste....sorry I missed the part in your last post comparing your console to a '69.  :-\

I just thought of one other difference in the 67 Charger console that should have registered in my tiny brain before.  The 67 Charger has a light inside the compartment as standard equipment and there is a hole in the back of the console compartment for this light.  Obviously, this hole would not be covered by a top plate if you were to use a 67 Charger console in a later year.  BTW, the top plate I refer to on the 67 is a trim plate.  The section with holes cut out for the clock would actually be a base plate which is removable like on the other years.  I'm just making this more confusing aren't I?  The hole in the console compatment is drilled in the plastic and is the one difference between 67 and the later years and is the reason the 67 console warrants a separate part number.  Howzat?
HOWEVER, you could still utilize the console from a 67 Coronet or Belvedere in a 68 to 70 Charger (or Coronet or Road Runner etc) and you would have no issues about interchangeability.
