Is an 8 3/4 rear with 3:91 gears strong enough for a 472 crate Hemi with and auto trans?
540 bhp. 550 lbs torque.
thanks!

Depends on traction. My lowly 383 scattered hardened axles in my 8 3/4. Horsepower means nothing until you have the ability to plant it to the pavement.

Every one thinks you need a Dana with the Hemi but, My Charger, and all 1969 Hemi Chargers equipped with the 727 auto, came with the 8 3/4" rear end as standard equipment. Mine has a 3.23 w/sure grip .  I believe any higher rear end package usually came with a Dana whether 4-speed or auto but, I am not positive. There might have been optional higher gears in the 8 3/4" also.

Anyway, what are your plans for the Charger?  I've been told 8 3/4" rear ends are good for over 700hp with an auto and my car has no problems and it is the original gear set. I hammered on it quite a bit in the late '70's but rarely floor the Charger or hard-launch it now. I would, personally, trust an 8 3/4" rear and save the expense of a Dana and the, roughly, 100 lbs. more it would add. However, if you are going to ride it hard, I would probably go ahead and get the Dana.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

What he said he said
No seriously will survive if prop built, no sure grip, track lock or equivalent ,
I have a stroked 440 with auto, rear housing is braced for limited abuse,
