Hi Guys--
New to the boards, but as of last Friday, im the proud owner of a 68 RT #s matching car its 98% all there as far as the eye can see and all original.  Found it in the foothills of Missouri.  Im 35 and my dream was to have this car and the goal was this year.  Well, here it is!

I have been in the real estate industry for 10 years, but as far as cars I don't know much.  I've studied, researched, know a lot about the Chargers from reading up and going to shows.......but have zero experience.  Im here to learn (ALOT!), gain wisdom, get advice, etc..

When should I go apply for a title or wait until I get the body work done this coming spring?   This is a project.  My concern is after title will come expected insurance.  Do you insure these as is?!  I also need to find a book on this car.  What's the best one?  (A Chilton?)

Thanks

Welcome to the board. I would title the car as soon as possible, and have it registered as non-op if possible. Get the factory shop manual - it is invaluable. And you did get the best year, by the way.  ;)  This board is the best for the 2nd gen Chargers. Welcome home.

Agree with Dan, get it titled first so that you have a clear conscience of ownership before pouring money and labor at it only to find out an obstacle in titling it later.

Also welcome aboard

And yes you did get the best model year :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Lots of knowledge in here for sure. Please post some pics if you can :popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn:

Thanks Dan,
I appreciate the help.  I will go get a non-operative title for it as soon as possible as well as find a factory manual.  Its a beast of a car even as it sits.  I started taking out the interior today.   I will be asking lots of questions on parts I have a feeling, but im having a blast already with this thing and I haven't really got started!!

You have to make sure they're under 200kb. and have  unique name.

Welcome to the group.

Welcome to the site, you've found the right place!

As others stated, get the car into your name and look into basic insurance coverage such as fire and theft.  It should not cost too much for that per year.

Get the manual mentioned, take a lot of photos and bag and tag all the items and keep them organized - trust me, this will make things much easier for you when it comes to re-assembly.   :yesnod:

As far as photos, try and resize them and post them here as what you and post may help others a number of years from now and if you choose to close your 3rd party photo account they will no longer be able to be viewed on this site.  Just my  :Twocents: on photos.

Congratulations on the purchase, looking forward to following your progress.

Thank You all for your help, warm wishes, and nice welcome!!!    I will be gone to Indianapolis for Thanksgiving but will be back and try to post pics then.  In the meantime, Dan, I will take you up on your offer and send you a couple of pictures to get me started on here.

Oooh! White top and interior. How is it that I haven't owned this one? Is it red? That's a great combination you've got.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

forsy1979

Yes,
It was an ordered car.  PP1 red with a white vinyl top, but they did the stripe delete with it. ? .. I love the stripe!   White vinyl bucket seats and interior and black carpet.  Frame rails are shot, needs floors and trunk as well as fenders.. the usual.

This is really my first toy if were talking something with an engine...lol.  Im like a kid in a candy shop!

forsy1979

I have a few body work questions:

Ive seen that a lot of people use the AMD panels then I read that they have "mopar" panels?.   Which should I use?   Im going to hire this out so I want to make sure we are putting good/high quality sheet metal and parts on this beast.  Since this is a #'s matching car, Im assuming its best to get it back to original everything?  Keep the original red verses doing ..say.. a b5 blue??  For value purposes, Should I be strict to the fender tag as possible?   I have thought about putting in good quality brakes than the old drum style that came with it.   Is that best or will it lower the value?    I have zero plans to flip the car, but like I do my other investments, I would like to treat this like an investment and raise and uphold as much value as I can in the car to keep it an asset while driving and enjoying it some of course.

I guess the main question is, How far do you go, or DO you do anything different, if you want to upgrade things on this car beyond period correct specs in order to keep its value?

I hope this all made sense..
