I used to spear fish regularly until I found out we have a great white nursery off our coast   , my greatest fear is being turned into shark sh*t   :yesnod:

It's extinct.  And no, I'm not scared of sharks.  Just respect them. :yesnod:

I don't think this vid is legit.

Like a year ago Discovery channel did basically a mockumetary on Megaladons being sighted today.  It was one of those things where they spent an hour presenting it as real, after running a 20-second disclaimer at the beginning saying it's not.

Having said that, IMO there does seem to be indirect evidence of sharks larger than anything we've documented before.  Maybe not megaladons but perhaps 25-30ft whites.

The "Jaws" mechanical shark body (Spielberg named it Bruce, after his lawyer) was 25ft long.  But the sculptor actually took a 12.5ft shark and scaled it up double sized, so Bruce's face/mouth size would still be a bit too large in proportion for a 25-footer.

XH29N0G

I'm a scaredy cat with a lot of respect for them.

(Went to WA a few years back and there was a bad time with the white pointers.  My family and I decided to go north to give them a miss and on our first trip in the water swam over a pretty big tiger shark.  It was 20-30 foot down, but looked big, maybe 9-12 foot long. That wasn't our last time in, but I still think about it.

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

Only the 2nd link (dead shark bitten almost in half) is legit.  The bite size is big but nowhere near Meg territory.

The other stuff is part of the Discovery channel's fake documentary.  It's pretty unlikely that Megs could be alive today.

There are some known reports of truly HUGE sharks being sighted over the centuries.  But a lot of them share one strange detail - they describe the whole body looking pale/white colored.  Typical bogus Meg imagery doesn't look that way.  Nor do existing whale sharks (a real existing 40ft non-carnivore shark).

I'm not afraid of sharks as long as there is plenty room between us, and preferably others to chew on so they may be full and satisfied by the time they get to me.

Afraid of what a shark can do, sure.  Outside of that I have a profound admiration for a creature that has evolved into a near perfect organism.  It lives to swim, eat and be a predator of all sea creatures and it does those things flawlessly; like a Charger of the seas, if you will...

Lord Warlock

Have to admit that sharks bother me enough that I no longer swim in the ocean, never cared until saw jaws when it was first released, and that didn't scare me off, was living in Washington DC then, I moved to Pensacola FL the following year where they filmed scenes for Jaws II, and they had the robot shark parked outside the motel at the beach, that didn't bother me either, that summer spent hours and hours body surfing on Pcola Beach, then 2nd year there was swimming near the pier at a church outing and found out a world record Bull Shark was caught in the surf right where I was swimming two hours before.  That bothered me.  Then got to see some pics from a Helicopter taking pics of the surf and realized how many LARGE sharks feed in the waters near swimmers there, ever since I've stayed clear of water deeper than chest deep.  Several people have been mauled by Bull Sharks over the years, but its still rare even though sharks are always present with hundreds of swimmers.
Moved to Jacksonville after my time in the military, never really enjoyed swimming at the beach here in Jacksonville, the water is a lot colder than it is in the Gulf of Mexico, the sand is dirty looking and packed hard like asphalt -people actually drive on the sand here, can't do that in Pensacola, you get stuck in sand there just running off the road with one tire.  Recently found out that Great Whites frequently swim up and down our beach area as part of the eastern US migratory path for large great whites.  (they tracked an 18 footer up and down the east coast and she was tracked repeatedly off our shores.)  Won't be going swimming anytime soon again.  After getting several biopsy tests for skin cancer I pretty much stay out of direct sunlight most of the time now.

Afraid? yes.
Curious ? yes.

Would I swim in the ocean if I knew they were there ? no.  Somethings are better off not knowing

But I rarely go beyond waist deep anyway.

2 years ago when we were in St Augustine FL. there was a 3 footer swimming right up near the shore, in less than 2 - 3 ft of water.
I havent been in the ecean since

But the studios don't want to take creative risks on unproven stuff . . .

. . . because there is so much at stake if they guess wrong . . . because movies cost so much to make now . . . because the SFX & production quality & marketing costs have gotten so high . . . because modern audiences expect so much . . . because ticket prices are so high . . . because movies cost so much to make now . . .

A few years ago a friend of my fathers was chomped on by a shark. This guy was in his 80's and had been swimming across a channel behind his house nearly every day for 30 + years. The channel is shallow. Only about 10 foot deep in the center and only a little over 100 foot across. No one saw the shark, but when they got to him he had been chomped on pretty hard through his torso and one arm. So NO... I love to swim in salt water, but these days I keep to my salt water pool..
