What does a 3:23 center section go for these days?

Since I now have 28" tall tires, my 2:96 gears are more like 2:75 gears so I may stick a 3:23 in there.  What does one of these go for?  Plain open 741, I'm on a budget (what's new...).

Stock tires are around 26" tall right?  Just in case I miscalculated.  Also, when going from stock to a 28" tire, what ratio would a 3:55 become?

a good rule of thumb in these cars is that you use the first two numbers of the ratio to get the gear you need. IE. 3.23 needs a 32 toothe ...3.55 needs a 35 tooth or rouned up a 36 tooth.

My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

That's only true if the tire diameter is around 26".
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I'm confused, are you talking about the speedometer pinion gear?  I didn't know about the relationship you mentioned so thanks for that, but I was looking for the actual rear end gear ratio when you go from a 26" to a 28" tire.

I had set my trans so it shifted into third around 30 mph or so, now that I have taller tires I find myself running in 2nd a little longer.  Instead of readjusting the linkage again I figured it may be a good idea to stick lower gears in the rear to get a bit more acceleration out of this old beast and still run low rpm at cruising.  I think the 3:55 may be a bit too low for my application but then again, it's just sitting here so I might as well give it a shot.  I think 3:23 may be right on the money but I can't find any open gears and I don't have the coin for a sure grip, nor do I need one.

Just keep checking Craigslist.  I picked up an open 3.23 489 awhile back for $125 IIRC.

Then I got a True Trac diff from Summit instead of looking for a wasted stock cone sure grip.

I have been running a 28 inch tall tire on the Charger since 1985.It was an original open 2:90, and couple years go I finally got around to throwing in my 3:23 suregrip. It did put the car in a better power band, or better said, the car preforms a lot better. Because of the larger diameter, it really is not 3:23, I tried to google a ratio conversion, no luck, maybe someone knows where to find a conversion link. I, at this point want to also try a 3:55, thinking, it may ratio out at around 3:35 to 3:45 to compensate for the larger diameter tire.

Nice!  I'm installing a True trac when I get the 6 speed installed, that's a while into the future though.

I'll keep checking CL.   :yesnod:

Right, I think the 3:23 is more around 3 even which would work for me.  3:55 with 26" tires did not do it for me though.  Not for my driving.  With a 28" tire it may be alright.

As for the original question. I paid 200.00 for a date coded 67 742 clutch style, needing a rebuild 4 years ago. Pick up another, 69 cone style 3:90 for 200.00 two months ago.
