68 charger restored? Seriously?

Hello all
anyone besides myself distraught at this listing on ebay?
Streetside Classics obviously bought this car which was at Sparky's Machines (for 69.9k) and now has it for sale at 6 grand higher.
Is this the future?
Dealers buying from dealers and jacking up prices continuously?
Is it true that early 1968 charger engine numbers were not stamped on the blocks to match the tag?
thanks

Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

I think they need to restore the grille assembly and bumper chrome (the list continues) to secure a premium anywhere near what the asking price is.

Personal taste- pistol grip is out of place prior to 1970.  :Twocents:

X2!!!! Nice car but geeze the price is just a lil high for my taste!! ;)  I can't really comment on the pistol grip shifter since I have one in my charger too. I swapped in about 4 different shifter handles and the last swap was to a pistol grip and after driving with that shifter handle I sold off the other one's and the pistol grip has been in there every since!!!! Of course i'm not claiming matching numbers and wouldn't be asking a fortune for my car even if it were for sale!!! ;D

They could ask a million for all I care.

Asking prices are meaningless.  It only matters what the buyers are actually paying.  On average.

It is true that many of the early 68s did not get partial VIN stamps on the block. It was supposed to begin in earnest on Jan. 1 of 68 but they kind of got around to it as they felt like it, or after they got yelled at a few times. My base model Jan. 8 Charger did not get stamped but I've heard many of the R/T's blocks did. Do they list the build date? I didn't see it.

Gauges and grille need to be redone and a different set of wheels put on it.

If someone thinks they can make a profit, see nothing wrong with it. Some will bounce between sellers till it ends up in the right hands.  Just makes ours worth more in the long run.  Would love to see my car reach the 50k or higher threshold one day.

Is it an A/C car?It can't be number matching if it's,unless it's another unicorn!

myk

It's a sad day in America when a business is chastised for trying to make a profit.  Maybe they should give the car away for free along with some food stamps?

Dealers have always bought and sold to other dealers.  I've been working in the classic car auction business a while now and I can assure you that half the cars moved at most auctions are between dealers.  Your inventory gets stale so you let it go, simple as that.  The buying dealer obviously has to raise the price or there isn't much sense buying it is there?

Excellent answers.
The bottom line is what is this car worth?
Is the market that hot on 68 RT's?
There are few good ones for sale anywhere.

As others have already stated....it's only worth what someone will pay for it.  It's the buyers that set the value/price, not the sellers.....

It's a nice looking '68, but priced to high in my opinion

4-speed R/T with a 8.75" rear....no reverse light?

In addition to the mentioned pistol grip and AC.

Troy

To answer a couple questions: it's possible that early engines weren't stamped. However, the fender tag on this one puts it at a late build date.

Unfortunately, that fender tag is fake as discussed earlier. Probably why these guys didn't post a picture of it. ;)

The dash reverse light would have been standard with the Hurst shifter (pistol grip didn't exist yet) which appeared in the early-mid 68 model year (late 1967 calendar year). Early cars came with an Inland shifter which has the handle that you have to raise to get into reverse so they didn't have a light.

That car has the extra trunk braces which would indicate an early build.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

That is interesting I thought all 68s vin stamped blocks. Mine 68 was built sept 67 and has those extra trunk braces and the block does have the matching # vin stamped.
68 Charger original SS1 paint with matching # 383hp

I thought it didn't start until January.  Cool.

So the vin tag is fake?
By the way...what does unicorn mean? A fake RT?
thanks

Unicorns don't exist.

Neither do 4-speed R/T with AC cars....or other supposedly impossible combinations.

:iagree:  (without any proof)....a few unicorns have actually turned up from Ma-Mopar, but not very many.   :Twocents:

And some unicorns are just genetic mutations created by Dr. Frankensteins.

Well, it sold for 68K.
This is the market now. High prices for 68's and 69's.
Unicorns or not!

Air shocks ......no.
Thought all RTs came with hp blocks in Orange ?
Love the headers though, looks bad ass underneath.
If that car is worth $68,000 mine might be worth the $98,000 my insurance guy appraised it for. I told him he was crazy.

Ghoste

In 68 the blocks were still turquoise.  I would take that price as more a fluke than anything. :Twocents:
