A plea for the pizza delivery guys (and gals)

All I can say if you deliver is watch out.  Its a huge liability.  Check your auto insurance policy.  I'd be willing to bet you're not covered if there's an accident during a delivery and the insurance company finds out about it. 

This is VERY TRUE, well depending on your state maybe.  I've been in the delivery business for over 10 years and have seen what can happen with sub contract drivers who try to cheap out.  If you do get in an accident while making a delivery and your insurance doesn't know you use your vehilce for purposes other than PERSONAL transportation, they will not cover the claim.  You will then either have to sue who you work for (not likely) or the people involved will sue who you work for (more likely but 80% chance that the company come sout ahead).

One guy parked his car, went in and made a delivery and then backed out of his spot for whatever reason w/o knowing that someone had parked right behind him, in a Mercedes.  His insurance wouldn't cove r the claim, we got a call but couldn't be held liable so the owner of the car ended up placing a claim on his own policy for repairs.  Just be careful.

I couldn't agree more. IMO, that's why it's called a tip...because the waitress/waiter earns an extra bonus over & above their hourly wage for a job well done. The person who gives me crappy service definitely gets tipped accordingly...or not tipped at all.
I always tip a person well who gives good service.

One peeve I have is when you're finished with dinner & you have to wait 20 minutes for your bill...or they take your credit card at the table to pay for dinner & don't return for 20 minutes!

   well lightning06    as a rule of thumb that we use ourselves is---when we order a pizza (from whomever) we always make sure we get a time frame.  from there we always use the 10% of the total as a measure of total tip.... even if it's longer than time promised.....but if the delivery is faster....we tip more.
    hey!  pizza drivers have to make a livin' too!!

I tip pretty well. However I don't agree with the whole process. If I pay for something the delivery or service charge should be included. I think tips are extortion through guilt. I was a Police Officer and never got a tip. Firemen don't get tips. You don't tip your childs teacher every time you pick up your kids. If I pay $75 for my wife and I to go out to dinner why should I feel obligated to leave an additional $12 for a tip? Don't get me wrong, I still do. I just don't like it.

When I delivered za for pizza the hut, we got a mileage reimbursement of $.25 a mile back in 1993 & $.50 per delivery.   You're getting screwed if they only give you $1 per delivery nowadays.   Go work somewhere else if they don't pay you enough.   I would make $30-50 in tips in a four hour shift on a semi busy night back then.

Wouldn't it be easier & cheaper just to send a small package as such through the US Postal Service with a $0.50 stamp.

I tip pretty well. However I don't agree with the whole process. If I pay for something the delivery or service charge should be included. I think tips are extortion through guilt. I was a Police Officer and never got a tip. Firemen don't get tips. You don't tip your childs teacher every time you pick up your kids. If I pay $75 for my wife and I to go out to dinner why should I feel obligated to leave an additional $12 for a tip? Don't get me wrong, I still do. I just don't like it.

There used to be a Huge association against tipping back in the 20's + 30's in America.  Their position was it was degrading to want more than what you were already getting paid.  Back then the prevalent attitude was that tipping was wrong.

I can agree with Telvis. - My Buddy absolutely will not Tip Pizza.  He works as a stove installer. Gas / Propane / Wood etc.   He figures he may be at a customers house 4 hours or all day or 2 days, climbing on roofs no matter how steep, going into insect filled crawlspaces to lay pipe, taking off and putting on shoes each time he enters the house.  Leaves the house clean with happy customer with Heat.  Carrying 300 Lb stove.     Does he get tipped ?  No.     But the dude who walks  50 feet up to a door carrying a 2 pound pizza + knocks deserves 10% or more ??

  I tend to agree with stove - installer dude.  However I do not order delivery. As MyFast says " delivery is for Wimps".
  Besides I don't need some pizza delivery guy telling his crackhead friends about a house with several " mint" old cars just ready for the stealing....

I always try to tip well if deserving, but I do remember many a time in the service were we barely had enough for the food and the only reason we chose pizza is because they deliver.  I think any job that depends on gratuity as majorty of the salary has to take an average.  You will have people who over tip and hopefully that covers those that don't tip at all.  On the other hand I'm sure you claim every dime in tips to uncle sam at the end of the year.  The guy who gives the $1 tip is probably closer to what is claimed than the guy who gives the $3 tip.

i totally understand telvis's point of view.. and i agree. why tip for a job like that?? the pay should just be higher to begin with. i worked at a restaurant for $2.12 an hour(i don't understand how that pay structure philosophy ever came to pass). and at domino's for 2 years back in the day.. made good money, but even so they paid me $5.50 an hour plus $.75 a delivery.. well taking 2-3 at a time and gas was $1.50 i made $15 extra on that end too at night's end, not counting tips... so it's a double edged sword.. i totally agree with the extortion by guilt thing. because when you see an 18 year old come up to your door with a pizza and they look so damn bummed out like they are just loving life SO MUCH, you can't help but give them a few bucks.. but like you said. i don't understand why it's either not already included, or why it was ever designed to be this way. but it doesn't make sense.. but back to the original topic lightning 06 been there done that bro. $1 tip sucks when you get there 10 minutes early or 10 minutes late.. very frustrating.. and just for the record.. i get mine carryout now since i live 4 miles away.. because 1. i'm a tightwad for everything except chargers.. 2. it's 4 miles away, i can get my lazy ass up off the couch and drive there.. and 3. usually when we order pizza, it's friday or saturday night.. which is the busiest night anyway with lead times generally 45 minutes to an hour.. and i'd rather go pick up my hot pizza than wait forever and take a chance that it's only lukewarm when i get it

I have had Delindas... and what a treat that is!!!

But my favorite is Piatzas... $3 for a slice that is bigger than 3 normals slices... and the chicken wing pizza... mmmm

Every dog has his day Lightning   People around here like StLouis style pizza, paper thin crust and provalone cheese.  I personaly like the pan pizza more calorie per slice

I do give extra to the REALLY good waiter/waitress too...about 20% usually.  Overall thought I agree with Telvis.

I delivered pizzas back in the 80's, 71 Dart with a /6...........that car was designed for pizza delivery!

Our shop stopped delivering pies on the weekends at 2:00am................lots of weird people roaming around at that time of night! One night early in my delivery career I stopped to ask directions to an elderly gentleman sitting on his porch around midinight. "Mr.......could you tell me which house is 342?"

The old man stood up, he was holding a shotgun!!!! "Getta outa here Cracker!" This was in the poorer section of town....

Never knew the /6 could burn rubber, but I learned that night!

It was a fun job but I also felt like a target at times...........I was just waiting for someone to make a cash withdrawl from me at anytime.

Most houses did not turn the outside light on at night.........or have a visible address marked anywhere. You have to find a house number on the street and start counting.......even numbers this side.....odd that side......etc. And maybe you wont get shot or mugged!

Do these guys/gals deserve tips if the service was good..................hell yeah they do!

I find that the people who don't tip are the ones who never had a job like that where your income depended on it.
