A plea for the pizza delivery guys (and gals)

Hello all in DodgeCharger.com world, I come to you with a small plea.

Next time you order a pizza, and are about to tip the delivery person, take into consideration four things:
1) how far away the store is from your house
2) how bad traffic is that day
3) the weather
4) GAS PRICES

y'see, we delivery drivers are only supposed to get paid the same as a waitress/waiter (in FL it's $3.15/hr), but with the company I work for, they pay us $5.25/hr. But even still, at least half or more than half of my pay each month comes from tips alone!

typically, resturaunts won't deliver to places that are more than four miles away, however if the house is a couple blocks outside of our delivery range, we'll usually deliver anyway.

sometimes people only tip me a dollar. A DOLLAR!! that doesn't even cover how much gas I used to get to their house (in the mitsubishi even!) the majority of the time I get tipped about $2.50 or so, $3 is better.

so anyways, that's my little plea for tipping delivery drivers.

I delivered pizza long ago when I was in college and I refused to work anyplace where I was required to use my own vehicle for deliveries. It's not worth it. The liability alone is frightening. Do you at least get a per delivery stipend from the company? If not you're basically paying them to deliver their pizza.

Old Moparz

Maybe you didn't deserve a tip.

1)   Did you bring the entire order?
2)   Did you bring the correct order?
3)   Did you show up on time? (Or in time for the next scheduled meal?)
4)   Did you greet the hungry customer in a friendly manner?
5)   Did you wear a clean pizza delivery uniform? (If applicable)
6)   Did you brush your teeth & present the food with a smile?
7)   Did you use the sidewalk or designated footpath to arrive at the door?
8)   Did you walk across the lawn & trample decorative plantings?
9)   Did you eye up the woman who answered the door in a sexual manner?
10) Did you eye up the man who answered the door in a sexual manner?
11) Did you get invited in & forget to wipe your feet?
12) Did you get invited in to satisfy anyone in a manner other than to bring food & decline?
13) Did you get invited in & attempt to satisfy in a manner other than deliver food & fail?
14) Did you forget you were indoors & spit tobacco juice on the carpet?
15) Did you go to the right house?

I'd answer those questions in complete honesty first, & then decide if you deserved a tip.

I always try to tip well if deserving, but I do remember many a time in the service were we barely had enough for the food and the only reason we chose pizza is because they deliver.  I think any job that depends on gratuity as majorty of the salary has to take an average.  You will have people who over tip and hopefully that covers those that don't tip at all.  On the other hand I'm sure you claim every dime in tips to uncle sam at the end of the year.  The guy who gives the $1 tip is probably closer to what is claimed than the guy who gives the $3 tip.

I did a summer with Papa Johns in Louisville - '89.  Loved it!!  I tip OK now.  What I did to make better $$... went back to college and graduated.

There's too many people out there who are freeloaders.  They only care about themselves.  At the same time, I hate people who EXPECT some kind of huge tip for an average job.  A lot of people I know who work as waiters/waitresses fall into this category.  Just because they can walk a tray of food to a table and refill drinks doesn't mean they should make more $ than someone with a college degree.

All I can say if you deliver is watch out.  Its a huge liability.  Check your auto insurance policy.  I'd be willing to bet you're not covered if there's an accident during a delivery and the insurance company finds out about it.

purple70rt

I know here at pizza hut, they charge me $2.00 for delivery.  I'm not going to tip on top of that.  Find another job.

Lightning

if P-hut's charging you $2 a delivery, they're rippin people off.

I work for Papa John's, and thankfully they only charge $1.25 a delivery, of which the driver (example: me) get's a dollar of. That's to ensure our fuel cost is covered if people don't tip.

here's ya a good example, if they quote that it'll take about 45 min to deliver the pizza, 20-25 minutes is prepping the pizza and sticking it in the oven, and at most, 15 to deliver it. where I'm from there's two towns butted up against one another (think Minneapolis/St. Paul, just on a much smaller scale) and it might take me 12 minutes to get from one end of one town to the other, that's about 8 miles with a ton of stoplights.

On the other hand if they do their job extremely well they deserve a good tip. There are a helluva lot of people out there that barely tip the recommended 15%. Two friends and myself went out for dinner the other night and the waiter was freaking awesome. I don't think our glasses ever got completely empty, the food was there in no time flat and he was extremely courteous about everything thus we gave him almost a 30% tip even though we're all a little tight on money. Im not saying always over-tip; IMO they have to earn their tip...

I agree.  I tip on service.  I go out I expect service.  I will never eat at another applebees.  For certain reasons.

In Vegas the Mandlay Bay.  I left 0 yea a big fat 0 for a tip.  I paid cash at the table and the guy counted out my change I took the coins and dollars and left.  WORST fricking service ever.  I had to ask the table next to me for the ketchup as the CHUMP never stopped by after we got our food.  The look on his face when I walked out with out tipping him was priceless :icon_smile_approve:.  The fact he thought he should have gotten one was even more funny..

although I have noticed (as far as delivering goes) people tend to already have how much they are going to tip figured out, even If the driver gets there 10 minutes ahead of the time the person on the phone said they would.

I always tip the pizza guy at least 4 bucks.  I delivered for dominos in the 80's while going to SUNY Cortland and got stiffed on the tip by enough of the residents to know better than to do the same

My Domino's guy takes care of me, so I take care of him. Now Pappa John's is a different story. While they have a nice selection, I had to drop them. The whole operation at this location is crazy. I had a 30 minute disccussion with the manager one night trying to give him advice on giving a better service. I never do stuff like that, but this particular Pappa John's sent me over the edge. I do miss those thin crust Spinach Alfredo pies though... :-\

No arguments from me.  If they do an awesome job, they deserve more than the expected 15%.  Like you said, it should be earned, not expected.

Tony's Frozen pizza is always the best and its ready in half the time - $3.50 on sale.
If I want a fresh pizza I stop and pick up a Papa Murphy's take and bake $10.
I also do the Boboli bread with some salsa peperoni, mushrooms, olives and cheese, 5 Minutes to throw it together and 10 in the oven - done.

Pizza Hut use to be really good until they went the Domino's Delivery angle.
Papa Johns has always sucked.
Round Table is ok.
Strawhat almost all but vanished.
Godfathers Pizza is history in my area.

I find the Small mom and pop pizza joints are the best for dine in pizza.

As far as tipping goes I usually tip 15 to 20 percent if I get good service.
If it takes more than an hour and my pizza is burnt, cold, looks like its took a ride in a tornado or has had the lid smashed on it .......
I think you can guess the rest.

Personally I think companys should pay their employees for the job they do and charge for the product accordingly not expect the consumer to make up the difference so their product looks cheeper than what it really is.

Just my 2 cents

Same here. Actually, I did just about everything in the pizza places I worked: cash, prep work, making pizzas/wings/subs/etc.. so, I was earning an hourly wage. Delivery was a nice break from the heat of the kitchen.
And the car belonged to the company and they covered gas. That was the best place for making money.

A lot of places around here don't have their own delivery anymore. They use a a delivery service that tacks $2.50 onto the order.

The service pays for the order from the pizza place and then collects the money from you with an extra $2.50. For an extra dollar they swing by the store and grab you some smokes or whatever else you want.
The service gets a cut, the driver gets a cut plus his tips. I usually add a buck. $3.50 is as much as I'll pay for delivery....
I often see whole families in the car doing deliveries.

Make your own pizza.  1/8 of the cost and tastes way better.  My Daughter enjoys helping to put the toppings on.  Buy the pre-made dough at your grocery store and go to it.

You want to make good tips, get a job as a waiter in an exspensive restaurant.  Sure the table turnaround is lower than say Red Lobster, but the bills and tips are way higher.

Be professional, courteous and know what you are serving and the customers will come back to the restaurant for the food and to see you.  You will make a great living doing that and be able to work in a nice environment also. You'd only be on the road twice in a day, to work and home.

I've never been a waiter but if that was the profession I chose, that would be my plan.

one of My roommates in college (We rented a 6 bedroom house) refused to pay tips ever! :flame: It always pissed me of. He said they get paid to deliver the Pizza and he doesn't get extra money for being nice to customers at his work so why should they. When I heard he ordered a Pizza I would sit on the porch and wait for the pizza guy. I would hand him a 5 and say the guy in there will pay for the pizza. He did the same at a restaurant to.
