Firing up a fresh 440 + 6 carb problems ???

OK, I have a fresh professionally built 68 440, 60 over 9:7 compression with a new 6 pack carb setup and a used  MP electronic distributor .  I primed the pump, added a bottle of comp cams break in oil. Rechecked the plug wires.  When it tried to start it backfired so I kept moving the timing back and trying again. It started firing down the exhaust so when it caught  I started bringing the dist. forward  and it would backfire and quit. Did this a few times and it also seems to run out of gas, it won't stay running for more than 30 sec. or so. Now I should say I am feeding the center carb only, I don't have the secondary carbs hooked up and I am using no ethanol  gas also.   I have a remote starter switch on it so I can have a hand on the carb linkage  also .  I have a 4bbl manifold and a good Carter 800 cfm. carb  I  am thinking of using to get this thing broken in before i go after the carb situation.     Any ideas ?    Thanks.

Runs on all three.  Need to hook up all of the carbs.

Switching to a good, known 4 bbl is a good idea IMO.

I emailed the OP the complete tuning guide-it's too large to post on there
OP: you need to read and use the guide to fix your problem.
If you do not follow the instructions no one can help you and it will never run correctly.

If you are  over on moparts i just posted it again - probably for the last time as  I am tired of the drivel, brainless brain matter and inability to retain good knowledge. Too easy to type get a big post count rather than get smarter.
Just like over there and here no one can copy, paste and save anything, but can sure pontificate very well on trivial matters and crucify anyone who wants a repro fender tag.
and there you have it....

Thanks, I got it and am in the process of reading it.  47 years ago when I got into the automotive trade as a gofer the shop I got into was body and mechanical and I could have started with either but but did collision and paint as I had no interest in the mechanical end of things and now it still comes back to get me 47 years later. :RantExplode: :RantExplode:

Keep the faith, when you do get the 6 pack going it will be worth it.  :2thumbs:
