69 fuel vent line

I have a 69 Charger 383 SE.  I bought it from a guy here in Las Vegas off eBay who isn't the most mechanically inclined.  He bought it in a bankruptcy sale for dirt cheap from Wyoming from a guy who did most of the restoration and did an outstanding job but couldn't complete it.  It was up on eBay last year, and the sale was withdrawn because I live locally, contacted the seller, and made an offer which he accepted so the auction was withdrawn.  I know many of the watchers were upset, and I think I got a great car for a great price.  However, I'm just finishing it up (is it ever done?).

The second port at the fuel tank is blocked off by a short piece of rubber 1/4" rubber hose with a 1/4" short bolt for a cap.  I don't think 383's are supposed to have a return line from the fuel pump (and mine doesn't).  What is the proper hookup for the 1/4" port on the fuel quantity sender (the one to the pump is 3/8).  Should it have a one way vent to prevent vacuum in the tank? Leave it capped?  Or should it hook up to the fuel cap vent line that runs along side the tank filler pipe.  Right now the fuel cap vent line is just open below the trunk pan.

Thanks for any advice.

You just have the wrong sending unit.  There are ones w/o the return line.  Just leave it capped, if you hook it to the vent line, your tank will have no way to relieve the pressure.

Congrats on finding a good deal and please don't have any guilt over that, any of those watchers would have done the same thing in your place.

Yep the sending unit is wrong for the car but it'll work as is.  As long as the transition hose from the 5/16" fuel line to the 3/8" unit is secure it'll be fine.  You could look for a sending unit to fit your car or if you need to replace the fuel lines you can upgrade them and add the return, but it's no going to make any difference in driving ability.
