Man walked up and shot a Canadian Forces Soldier while he was standing guard at the Memorial outside Parliament killing him. Then rushed inside the Parliament building and has shot at least one more person. Gunman still on the loose:

Turns out to be two or three gunman! One gunman dead, another fled on a motorcycle. Reports of shots at a Hotel nearby though. Whether that was the Second gunman or a third (the Hotel is where all the people from Parliament stay) is unclear at this time.

Tell us what you know about our gun laws please.

Not trying to be a dick, but curious as to how familiar others are about gun laws in Canada.

Oh, we do have very strict gun laws, but in Canada, criminals have more rights than law-abiding citizens... and their "excuse"?... not criminally responsible due to mental illness... Big load of f-ing BS!

Pretty much the same in the California especially the part about the criminals.

Here's your chance to shine, tell us about your gun laws and how they prevent gun violence.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Truth be told, I don't know much about our gun laws at all.   :shruggy:

From what I hear/read/know (and I don't read that much about gun laws), guns are not readily available to the citizens.

Always been fascinated with guns, I am a really good shot (my US friends tell me I am one of the best they have seen) but never owned a gun or attempted to own a gun.

I was/am curious as to what citizens of other countries know/think about our gun laws and from what you wrote, it seems, some think our Government is foolish to not allow the common man to be armed.

As stated, wasn't trying to be a wise a$$ but was curious eh!   ;)

Canada has three tiers of guns:

Non-Restricted - Don't have to be registered with the Government.

Restricted - According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:

~a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
~a firearm that
        is not a prohibited firearm,
has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,
~a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or
~a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm

Restricted firearms must be registered with the Government. You need approval from the Government to move them out of your home (Authorization to Transport), and can only take them to Government approved shooting ranges.

Prohibited - According to the Criminal Code, a prohibited firearm is:

~a handgun that
has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or
is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge, but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,
~a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
is less than 660 mm in length, or
is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,
~an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or
~any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm

You need a special license to buy prohibited firearms and you cannot apply for one. You have to be Grandfathered in (IE you or your parents must have had firearms that became prohibited in 1969). These guns cannot leave the home to be fired at all.

Gun control doesn't work; it never has, it never will.  All it ever does is leave people defenseless and just waiting to get slaughtered helplessly by bullies and cowards that will only prey on those that can't fight back.  Only thing you can do is try to level the playing field by letting law abiding citizens defend themselves.  Remember this: an armed society is a polite one...

A powerful picture! Both soldiers on guard duty that day at the Memorial had UNLOADED C7A2 rifles... here they laid while Cpl. Nathan Cirillo received CPR in the background. Fatally shot in the chest.... :brickwall:

My thoughts and prayers go out to this week's victims and their families families.

I work four blocks from where this happened. Spent the day in lockdown. Business as usual today..."we will not be intimidated"

Quotean armed society is a polite one...

I've heard this one before and I sometimes wonder if it would be true or not.   :scratchchin:

I can't help but think of the western movies where a guy is in a saloon and steps on another guys foot by mistake and then there is a gunfight in the street.  Next scene, the town coffin builder is grabbing his hammer and nails and adding two more to the list of jobs for the day.   ;D

Western movies, hell go to modern day Compton or in Detroit around say, Livernois and 94 and try it.  Or for that matter any American inner city or gang infested area and see well politeness thrives.
(incidentally, the unarmed Canadians are rightly or wrongly stereotyped as being among the most polite nations around)

All I know is I am Happy to live in South Carolina, where if you have the chance to get the drop on somebody breaking in your house, you can freely get rid of them without fear of going to jail.  The only place I would rather live than here would be Texas.

When will the leaders of western civilized countries get their heads out of their asses and stop this PC crap and call these Muslim bastards and their religion for what they really are; terrorists and the religion of hate and death. Islam at the very least is certainly the worlds largest death cult. Just imagine the death toll if they were not so "peaceful".   ::)

Bill Maher is a big-time douche, but at least he realizes that Islam is a major problem, unlike his guest....

No kidding.  They've declared war on us.  Publicly announced it, several times, used the word "WAR".  Declared it on us.  And the west keeps saying, "well, you know we were kind of mean to them, we need to be more understanding and tolerant and then they'll like us".
Kind of like Chamberlain and Hitler.

Are the wrong people in office? Or is the population overreacting because of the media. Or how come all us Joe Blows feel one way and the ones running the country feel the opposite. Of course they don't read the newspaper or listen to the news for their information.
