I'm thinking about installing a 6 pack on the 440 in my '69 Charger.  I know they weren't available on Chargers until the 1970 model year.  What I'm worried about is hood clearance.  I know they fit under the hood of a '70, but since '69 and '70 hoods are different, will it fit under the hood of a '69?  Any pics?

Thanks in advance

Clearance is the same on both hoods.  Six packs are cool but maintenance/adjustment/reliability is a pain.  One Holley is bad enough then you have two more to deal with.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

'OP the aforementioned drawbacks are true but don't let that deter you if a six pak is what you want.  After all, we don't buy classic Dodge Chargers for their practicality and ease of use.  As far as I'm concerned living with a classic Charger is a pain in the ass no matter what, so you might as well go all the way and set it up the way you want.  Besides, it's not like you're DD'ing this thing, right?

Meh, didnt think it was that much of a big deal to get my six pack running as good as my 4BBl set up. It took a little bit of time and patience and some reading. To me, it was well worth it hearing that incredible noise when they are all wide open, agree it clears with no trouble. I had the six pack hood but it was because I was using the taller K &N filter but should have no trouble with the stock one.

6-pack will clear a '69 hood, I have one in mine.  :yesnod:

It's been pretty reliable so far, once it was dialed in. Haven't had to tinker with it too much. This is my first 6-pack equipped car also.
A small suggestion is to look into a setup from ProMax. They offer modified outboard carbs that are tuneable on the car without having to disassemble them. Also, you provide your engine specs up front, and your setup comes to you already preassembled, flow tested, and dialed in as close as possible to your combo.
Mine needed minimal adjustments. Pulls like a freight train. Highly recommended.

Or, if you've got deep pockets you can look at the 6-pack fuelie setup from F&B:   :drool5:

I have a Six Pack in my 69.  They take a little more time to dial in properly but not a great deal.  The best way is to set the way they came stock and then leave it alone.

Buying a used setup is the scary part. You never know what was done to it.
I used a stock set up as a daily summer driver. Was very reliable.

Thanks for all of the responses, guys.  I really appreciate info based on 'real world' experience.

myk...no it is not a DD but I do manage to put 5 - 6000 miles on the car per year.

Some people talk about Holleys being temperamental and unreliable, and while I experimented with a 750 hp dp and a 950 hp dp, both taking some time to dial in and finally settling on the 750 hp dp, I drive the hell out of the car and never have to touch the carb.

Then why switch carbs, you may ask?  Because this past weekend I got the opportunity to ride in another Mopar with a 440 very similar to my setup that had a six pack, and while my car pulls pretty damn hard, the one with the six pack felt like it pulled half again as hard!  It really intrigued me.

Thanks again for all of your responses.

I don't know about you guys I have a 68 charger and I bought it for great MPG, cruise control, air conditioning, can run high 10s at the track and take it home with air on it, comfort, etc....

I have a 750 hp dp on my 440 in a 70 charger and having problems. do you remember what size jets you have? My brother has a six pack in his 69 charger and has  40 hp more than mine and our engines are almost identicle he has manifolds I have headers

Don Duick....my 750 hp (80803) came with 76 jets front and rear.  I couldn't keep the plugs clean.  Other Holley 750 dp carbs(4779) usually had 71 jets so I replaced my 76s with 71s and it works great.  I made a few other changes too.  I can look back at my notes and tell you what else I did if you are interested....

If not too much trouble would be great. Did you ever have a flat spot and cold running  problem ? Wanted to know jet size for a starting point. I have 72 front and 74 back feels like its starving for fuel and 4.5 power valve. manifold vacumn is 10 when I check plugs after idle they are black after a rum they are light grey. never had a rich idle and lean open throttle before. these hp carbs sound like a nightmare to tune.

Don....I'll check my notes tonight when I get home and will let you know.

I'm running a 6 pack on mine too, same problem with the rich idle. Runs great but it drinks gas, Google says guys were getting close to 20 mpg if the were driving conservatively. I'm getting like 8mpg running 71's in the primary with a 5.5 power valve, vacuum is 8 at idle. I'm thinking a smaller power valve .
Do the jet sizes affect idle much ? I figured idle mixture was controlled by mixture screws but I can't get her to run leaner.

you need 3.5 power valve. I am assuming your centre carb is a 350 then 71 jets may be a bit on the big side. Try the other extreme and go 68 size jet then work your way up from there.

don't worry I have sorted my problem now. No need to cause any inconvenience to you but thanks for offer. I found a thread in the performance section which addressed my problem
