A friend down here found a 1st gen Charger with cluster all hacked up. have not see it personally yet, but just getting his description So He is thinking on get another healthy one. Doesn't need to be perfect, but healthy

beside some private seller on ebay, do you know some rebuilt service able to have some one in stock on these

There are some but I don't think they are cheap.  When you say the cluster is hacked up, what do you mean exactly?

Nacho-RT74

I still have to check it personally to know what he meant about hacked up. Maybe he doesn't know gauges are wired kinda diff than the regular ones.

will know later

Okay, keep us updated then because it could just be an easy fix.

A lot of the used ones I have found for sale are hacked up around the radio area from a previous owner mounting an AM/FM radio in place of the standard AM radio.

yes, the gauge doc... I made reference to him on OP

I have to check how is really the conditions of this one. I think the search will be more related on gauges and housing than the rest. EL ballast is missed too.

Wasn't aware about tach diff between 66 or 67 ( not even the minor look diff ? ), but I don't think that will be a problem. If cares, this one is 66

66 Charger had a seperate tach sending unit, 67 Chargers had the sending unit built into the tach itself.

I still can't tell the minor look differences on those pics LOL.

My friend is telling me he wants another cluster anyway. The back of cluster was drilled everywhere to install "exterior" bulbs to ligth up the cluster

Yes, they called one satellite dish and the other volcano.
One other difference is one says gasoline, the other fuel. I have only ever seen one and that was at Moparfest either last year or the year before.
That is part if the clear plastic that covers the gauge and they have just a slightly different finish.  Other than that, no not much difference.

Ghoste

Keep in mind also Nacho that in those photos, one has been shot just as a regular pic and the other was shot to portray the guage lit up while still showing the rest in normal light.  It gives the one a sort of chromed look to the overall instrument that isn't really there.  Other than that center ornamentation, the two would look the same and more like the second pic to the naked eye.

ChargerST

I would love to see how it would look if you put the 66/67 cluster in a second generation dash...

Nacho-RT74

ok surfing around we found one with silver center but fuel lettering.

66 or 67 ? LOL

one note... the car in Venezuela is 66, full console, silver buttons on center of gauges, but red medallion on grill, instead gold. as far I know 66s should be gold...

maybe late 66 production ?

now, what about if he get a built in tach sender unit cluster for his 66, and his car is external sender unit... I guess should work, just modifying the tach wiring... right ?

:iagree: They were all red as Ghoste says. I have told this story before but will tell it again.
Back when I first bought my 67 I had a fellow come up to me with NOS parts for a car he never restored. Zoom forward, I bought the parts and one of the pieces was a brand new, in the box, NOS center grille emblem which I promptly put on the car along with the new grille he had.
Fast forward again to 2014, it has been almost 10 years and the grille emblem which was red when it went on in 2005, is now almost completely gold. I am guessing another couple years and the red pigment will be completely gone.
I have actually had several people say to me at a show, "I thought only 66's had gold emblems in the front."
Red emblem fades to gold - end of story  :yesnod:.

AGree with ODZ and have another data point for what is worth.  I also have a NOS center grille emblem and it is red

ODZKing

Yep, that is what mine looks like now.
As far as the 66/67 tach, the 67 will work in the 66 dash, you simply have to bypass the sender which is mounted near the heater box which looks like this.

Here is the 66 vs 67 tach for your reference as well as the schematic (yes, same as Imperial).

ODZKing

And here is a shot of mine back in 2011 at the CEMA show at the Chrysler Museum

Nacho-RT74

sounds logic... however whoever in defense of the gold medallion theory could tell you the red NOS is a NOS 67 medallion, not a 66  LOL

Finally, the ebay seller  accepted a $500 offer for the one I located, which by what we have found is not really bad

Expensive to what I'm used to see on 3rd gen clusters price rates, but seems kinda "fair" for what we have seen.

Now searching for the EL transformer. There is one NOS which seems to be fixed on a factory fail but not tested after that.

We hope cluster will be in working order

I believe Bryan A383Wing has been repairing them. PM him. Unless it is REALLY shot, it can be repaired with new components.

never seen a dash that said "gasoline" in place of the "fuel"

I have OE gold medallion here in my car, no red at all...plus I picked up a NOS gold medallion years ago

I can rebuild the dash light power pack here, plus we are coming out with brand new units made in USA

not yet, but I can rebuild the old one for less money, I'm sure...it's gonna be a couple more months before the new ones will be available....you might wanna save your pennies because I bet that cluster is going to need some work done on it

Nacho-RT74

I'm hoping don't need any work on the cluster LOL.

Do you think went for a nice price ? $500 ?

we don't have any powerpack, so would need an unit to be rebuilt yet LOL

this is the one on ebay right now, which says got a fail from the box, but repaired. What do you think ?

A383Wing

The power pack on ebay is not correct for the Charger, that one does not put out enough voltage to light our dashes correctly. That one is for the early Chryslers that has less to light up than our cars. There is another seller there that sells little black plastic power packs as well, don't get one of those either, one shorted out and almost burned the car down.

Personally, I think you spent way too much for an unknown cluster....but it's too late now....again, my opinion

Bryan

Ghoste

I can't comment much on the price but I will say that I've bought from Kramer a few times and always been happy.

Nacho-RT74

well the initial price was $625 or so, and Kramer accepted $500, sooooo... just waiting and hoping is in working order.

ok, didn't know about the powerpack... and my friend already bid on it!!!

( he is becoming kinda desesperated to get all the parts faster as posible, and I'm telling to get patiente )

yes, on a previous discussion I got the warning call about the repopped pieces

A383Wing

you might want to tell yer friend to retract his bid on that power pack...it won't light up the Charger dash very good

Nacho-RT74

what "problem" could he get ? not enough light or some overheating problem ?

( it seems it got more bids, not from my friend so no need to retract at this time )

let me know guys if somebody gets one needing to be rebuilt and able to send to Bryan LOL
