Firecore System Installed:Distributor, Coil, and Factory Fit Wires!

I have given up the fight dealing with factory original carb's and distributors.  Both original pieces were professionally restored and tuned by well known vendors.  500.00 resto on the distributor and 400.00 on the factory carb.  The car ran "OK" but as a typical Mopar nut, I knew it can be better.  So I am NOT knocking the vendors that restored those items to perfection.  The problem is 40+ year old parts and modern fuels.

Made an executive decision and boxed the original parts up and got in contact with Ron.  Ron is very knowledgeable, reliable, professional and set me up with the right system for my application.  I purchased the distributor(rev box built in it), coil, and the factory fit wires.  This allowed me to maintain a factor appearance in the engine bay.  The fire core distributor fits perfectly and has no clearance issues.  My repo OEM wires were slightly shorter than the fire core factory fit wires.  Which was a great improvement on placement and flexibility to rotate the distributor.

Ron, also said to take the ballast resistor apart and solder an 8 gauge jumper between the two connections.  Then slip the jumper and clips back into the ballast, put on your clamp and reattach to the firewall.  Awesome trick and allows for a full 12V to your coil/distributor.  While maintaining the stock appearance.

Installed everything and fired it up.  Bumped the key and immediately fired up.  I was in a state of shock because it has never done that.  Also installed a new Edlebrock carb at the same time.  So had to play with that a bit.  Waited for the motor to warm up and did not have to make any timing adjustments!  Today, I hooked up my timing light and it was at 15* initial and 21* mechanical, total 36*.

This is the key:  idles smoother, rev's smoother, eliminated my valve train noise due to points/new fuels,  and I have a real mechanical advance.

Cannot be any happier!  Ron, THANKS! and THANKS to Firecore an American Quality Company!

I'm going to shortly be doing the same so its nice to hear your positive results.  :2thumbs:

Same here, looks good.

I didn't know that you still need the ballast resistor if the distributor had the rev box built in it. Or am I thinking of the ready to run FireCore Distributor.

What model of distributor is that?
"Dear God, my prayer for 2024 is a fat bank account and a thin body. Please don't mix these up like you did the last ten years."

Ghoste

You don't, the jumper wire bypasses it and then the ballast is just there to give it a stock appearance.

Ron sent me the ignition box, dist., wires and coil. Runs great and the wires are top notch stuff. Only complaint was the cheap harness connectors not locking together causing it not to fire on occasions. Took me a while to figure this one out. Cut them off and installed different quality connectors and has never failed to fire since.

What about the coil, is it oil filled or encased with epoxy?

I dont know, Ron will have to answer that.

Very happy with my RTR system and Ron goes above and beyond to make you a happy customer.   :yesnod:

Did you also install new plugs? If not, Ron recommends NGK bcpr6es I noticed another improvement with the use of these plugs.

The model is the RB 413-440 RTR distributor  SKU: DC-1007B

I am not sure but I will ask Ron.

Surprised he hasn't jumped on here yet and answered himself.  He must be racing somewhere.

Hey Justin,

Glad to hear the beast is running better ! It's nice to hear positive feedback....thanks for posting. Timing looks spot on....good job  :2thumbs:

The ballist resistor by-pass is a neat trick to keep everything underhood looking stock  :icon_smile_big:

For those that asked ; The HP cannister style coil that Justin used on his engine is oil filled. We have several hundred of these in service without any leakage issues. Some have been in use for a few years. The square style CD ignition coils are epoxy filled but don't look stock.

The Billet Mechanical distributor that Steve used on his supercharged stroker build  comes with an MSD style connector for the pickup. That unit is designed to snap in to the MSD wiring harness and the plug is not that great. I have allways swapped the MSD plug/connector in the past for something a little more robust/secure....like the factory Mopar piece which is an excellent connector !  :yesnod:

I just purchased the RTR distributor (firecore) and coil from Ron and lovin it so far!!! Timing is rock solid at 16 initial and 18 mechanical. Run's great there and am ording the wire set this week and some NGK plugs this week too!!! Finally feel like I got a great ignition system on my charger instead of what I had. I was running the mopar performance set up but lately it just didn't seem to be all that good. It was better than points but for the money the firecore parts are the way to go!!!! Swapped in my new distributor and new coil in less than an hour and it fired right up!!! Set the timing to 16 degrees and haven't touched it since. Has a quick rev and solid idle and smooth acceleration and will be even better with a new wire set and plugs i'm betting!! Ron is great to deal with!!! My new parts were here in two days!!  :yesnod:

Ron, is a rock solid guy to deal with!!  Today, was the first chance I got to do some street testing.  Car fired up immediately, maintained smooth idle both at a stop and driving, sounded and ran like I had a different motor, no kidding!  Performance and reactivity was a 180 turn from what I had before.  I am so pleased and at a loss of words.
My GTX I have the Mopar setup and I am completely displeased with that system.  Whenever I restore that car it will be firecore all the way.

This is such a great post in so many ways. Quality product, customer service, and educated customer. When combining all three, great things will happen. Ron does go above and beyond. He is the key to quality customer satisfaction. Great info. Thanks.

YUP Firecore and Ron a great combo! I have the RTR on my 70's 440 with the same superb results. I have the square coil as I don't care about looking original. I've run Firecore wires for several years, even just adding the wires makes an immediate improvement, so much so I had Ron/Firecore make a set for my 6cyl Cherokee!  :2thumbs:

I really like the idea of eliminating my ignition box and ballast resistor. I see on the website it says "simple three wire hook up" and it pictures what looks like a weatherpak terminal. Where do the three wires connect?

I loved getting rid of the orange box and ballast resistor!  The RTR system is probably the best thing under the hood right now.   :yesnod:

Did you just make up your own 3-wire harness with a Weatherpak connector for the distributor to plug into? I have the kit to make Weatherpak connectors, so that's no big deal, just wondering.

The Firecore RTR comes with the detachable wiring harness and is very easy to wire-in  :2thumbs:

If you need more info send me a PM and I can explain everything you need to know  ;)

It was all plug and play, all I did was run a new wire from the bulkhead connector but that was because I modified the charging system, you won't even have to go that far.

I am installing a new firecore rtr distributor...can anyone walk me through the install and what to do with factory harness? ....im slow make it easy  :smilielol:
