wonder why dodge   never made a factory one

Cos of pics number 3 and 7 I'd imagine......
Gotta love a '69

Stevearino

I could be wrong but that doesn't look like the top actually retracts based on the way it fits the dutchman panel and what looks to be a solid side window roof molding. If that would be the case and the top is just removable why not make a light weight fiberglass top instead of that ill fitting simulated rag top.? :shruggy: Nice looking car without the top though. :Twocents:

VegasCharger

Nice work put into to that Charger but the top just screams generic. Also 68-70 Chargers need the hard top to carry out those beautiful body lines. One of the great features on the 2nd gens is the back window tunnel/sail panels and that is lost with a rag top.

The car is okay as long as the top is down but not my cup of tea, gotta have the hardtop especially with NO vinyl.

Ghoste

My thoughts too.  B-body convertibles in general when the tops are up lose some appeal to my eyes but the Charger especially so.

TUFCAT

It looks like the Monkeymobile with the top up.  :eek2:   It must be a giant pain in the ass to remove... for all that time, money, and effort why not figure out how to use a factory B-body mechanism from a Coronet or Belvedere/Satellite?   It would look much nicer and have more resale value IMO.

P.S. > I love the gray house in the background... :drool5:

So the Charger 500 and the Daytona must be a real abomination huh ? :smilielol: :smilielol:

Having said that I do think they look better when you have a Coronet or Satellite convert to start with and hang Charger sheet metal on it ?  :Twocents:

There are a lot of people who don't like the flush back glass on those cars actually.  I've always been strangely conflicted myself, I love the 500's and the sleek speedway look to them but two of my favorite features about the 69 is the grille and tunnel back window.

Highbanked Hauler

I just  HAD to make a comment about roof lines as years ago when only a few people knew what a 500 was  twice I personally have  been accused of  screwing up a beautiful car with my s---y custom work :smilielol:   One thing I learned a long time ago is you can't please everyone.   I saw a pix of a 70 Monty Carlo under construction  (Hard top only) with an Olds Cutlass convert roof on it so I would guess the GM people would be flustered also

You have to admit the Monkeymobile top is a little radical :shruggy:

Wonder what holds the back of top on :scratchchin: :shruggy: LEON.

A383Wing

the original Charger convert on the drawing board had the top designed with the sail panels in them. There were 2 cables that had the top over them to make it look like a vinyl top car when the top was up

TUFCAT

This is what I saw when I first looked at it.  :D

hemi-hampton

Tuffcat, whos that in red shirt behind charger in your pic?

Tough crowd.

The guy probably saved a 1970, which isn't much of a big deal, right? What if a tree fell on the roof, and this was his "fix"  :Twocents:

On the positive side, the restoration appears to be nicely done and is most likely a professional job....I'm giving some credit for not simply turning this into some hack job restoration.    .....and he also gets my vote for "good use of color"!  :yesnod:

A383Wing

I like the entire car..I would drive the hell out of it

haters can post up their car so we can pick it apart

JB400

Outside of where they cut the quarter panels to remove the roof, not bad.  The quarter panel doesn't flow into the Dutchman panel and the trunk like it should.  That's why there's a 1" (approx.) gap under the rear of the top across the Dutchman panel and along the rear parts of the quarter.  They should have gotten some Coronet convert pieces to help fill this area in.

polywideblock

they could have done a chip foose and turned it into a roadster (no roof 2 seats AKA Christopher  Titus Chevy )  and just told owner to only drive it in the sunshine  :Twocents:

I would have thought coronet or satellite parts would have made a workable top  :scratchchin:

all in all looks great with the top off  :drool5:  not so much with it up   :eek2:  so a sunny day cruiser  :yesnod:

I give extra points for using the stock height Charger windshield opening and vent windows. :coolgleamA:

I take away several points for leaving the front 4-5 inches of the original Charger roof skin,

Chroming, or painting it "chrome" and sticking what looks like "B" body convertible stainless trim on top of it.  :eek2:

The removable top is a no go.

The rear Dutchman panel area isn't working for me either.

I really like the side view of it without the top, and with a few fixes to the items I mentioned above...

I'd cruise the wheels off of it.  :2thumbs:

I've got a few 2nd generation Chargers put away...

One has a rusty top. :scratchchin:

I might attempt to build my own Charger convertible someday...

If I live long enough. :eek2:

If Chrysler had made  392  69  big block converts like they did 500's they would be on the list of cars to get also.   That 69 red and white convert  looks like a clean well done car.   :2thumbs:   and like 383Wing said haters post up your pictures.   If I could post pix of mine you could roast that along the way. :nana:

I like this car - everything except the Charger script on the front fenders  :Twocents:

Mike DC

Compare the red convert and the purple one.  Notice anything different?

Look at the A-pillars/windshield/vent windows.

The red car is like a regular B-body convert.  Taller windshield.
The purple car still has the 2dr hardtop stuff which is visibly lower.  It suits the Charger's lines so much better.

A383Wing

which is probably why the top looks a little odd on the purple car when it's up.

and the red Charger started life as a real 69 R/T....I understand why he put the "Charger" emblems on the fenders, because with the sail panels gone, nowhere does it say Charger on the side

Ghoste

Call me a hater all you like but I won't pretend to like something I don't.  It's okay for you to like it and its okay for me not to.  ;)

Nice job on the car not so much on the convertible top. I agree with the others that the convertible would have been better served with a hard top over the rag top. Still one clean looking car!

bill440rt

If the purple convert Charger is the same car I'm thinking of it was a Jersey car for quite a while. I know the guy that used to own it if it's the same car. Purple/white, with a removable "fixed" soft top. Most likely the same car, I can't image there are two purple/white ones with removable soft tops like that.
He had quite a few "weird" ones. Never really drove them or took them out all that much.

surely someone with fiberglassing skills could make a removable hardtop that looks like the real deal

then you'd have your choice of hardtop or roadster  ,didn't they call them a carson top back in the day

After reading the description...

Could one not just have a new carson top made with a spare roof skin?  I mean, sure it may cost another 1-2K; but it would be what you wanted out of it.   :scratchchin:

Good idea, but I think any hardtop would be weight prohibitive on such a big car.... :scratchchin:

Even though this one isn't aesthetically appealing for most of us, its foldable and probably light enough to handle (like a heavy tent I would assume).  It could even be stored in the trunk if the length works out.

That's why I still like the factory folding soft top idea...even though the windshield rake is a few degrees changed.

Just having a little fun with the top.     :yesnod:

I think we all agree that it's a nice machine overall, and appreciate the amount of work that went into the car.

Purple Charger convert with white interior?  Are you kinding me....talk about a head turner everywhere you go.    :2thumbs:

Similar.

workworkwork

I would love to have the purple Charger. If anyone want's to give that one to me I would be happy to drive it everyday.

indreams84

If it were me, I would fully dedicate the purple convert and lose the top.....maybe place a waterproof car cover in the trunk just in case. It's not like the future owner (or us) would take the car out on a crappy day- at least I wouldn't.

I like em with the top down.  But they look pretty bad with them up.

workworkwork

Seems to be a beautiful car. If you baught it and didn't like the roof you could do anything you want with it. You could even put the original type white vinyl top roof back on it. But I would just drive it like it was. My guess is that in the rain a lot of water would be coming into that car with the roof up. Can't imagine it sealing well.

Seems high but maybe he'll get it.  At the end of the day I hope buyer and seller are happy.

To each his own, but I think the B-body hardtop roof line on 68-70 cars is one of the best features. Take it away and replace it with something that does not mimic it, and the car is less attractive. The only attraction of a convertible is that it is different and unusual.
