which one is the correct size?  it looks like they have two choices that would fit 1968.

G24ME/ML >>> 10.25x6.75x9
G27ME/ML >>> 12x6.75x9

I think both are correct for '68. The group 27 battery would, at the very least, be for the 440 and Hemi cars. I think it was also used with the 383. There may be options like A/C that called for it too. I have seen the Group 24 on 318 cars mainly.

I would go with the Group 27 for both your car's Paul. I don't think these are the sealed ones though. Are those even available anymore?

I sent them an e-mail asking for the correct battery for my 68, 440 auto, A/C.

Here is what they said:

G27ML $145.00 lead acid plus shipping.
G27ML/B. $250.00 maintenance free.plus shipping (looks the same)
Call 1-800-426-7580 to order M-F 8-3

Holy Crap. :o  My 68 is gonna get a napa battery :yesnod:  Maybe i'll shell out the $$$ for the 500 when that day comes.

Yes, they are pricey. It is nice to see the maintenance free ones are available. Time to save up.

I have one of the batteries that you need to "maintain".  I had a hard time spending that much, let alone $250 for a maintenance free battery.  Why spend that much on something that will only die in a couple of years?  I have had the maintenance type batteries last me for about 4 years and that was with keeping an automatic trickle charger on them.  For  $250, I am sure I can find other items on my car to correct with that money.

That depends on what you are after. I want my car to look original and that is an important part IMO. If that is not important to you or other owners then definately don't buy one. I have one of the dead older versions I use for show but, I am getting tired of taking it in and out all the time. Plus, one slip and my fender could easily have $250 worth of damage. I usually get 6 or 7 years out of a normal maintenance free battery.

I've also recently seen the repro batteries on www.jacksautoparts.com for $200. Specifically: http://www.jacksautoparts.com/catalog/electrical.html It doesn't say if they are maint. free or not.

Looks like an idea there Chris. Be nice to be able to buy a fake cover for a regular battery.

If you look close at the pic you willl see the rods coming off the orig battery terminals are clamped to Z shaped pieces of metal that attach to the new batery....

Chris,

How do you reattach the side of the shell so it doesn't look like crap? And then how do you attach it so it can be removed later if/when the battery inside goes bad?

they have one.  paddock sells it, called battery topper.  although it is only the top. you can make it look reasonable by painting the modern battery black.

true but its only for the smaller group 24 batteries not the larger group 27 batteries

The smaller Odyssey battery is installed on the bottom...the cut out is on the bottom.  I didnt do this mod as of yet.  A member on Moparts has done it with success

I wonder what the CCA rating is on that little thing?

As per their specs the PC925 has 380 CCA  and 925 HCA

http://www.enersysreservepower.com/ody_b.asp?routine=ody_spec&brandID=5

Is that enough? I thought our cars needed more cranking power than that. Maybe it's fine with a ministarter but I guess if the Moparts guys is using it without any trouble it's ok. Definitely a fare-weather setup though I would think.

Just 6T9 CHGR

I guess you're right...it does seem a bit low?   I havent done this personally so I really cant comment but the guy on Moparts said it works fine for him........

Im sure there are other batteries out there that would work as well

What car was he using that battery in? I'd say you should have somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 CCA for a big block. Those reproduction batteries range between 600 and 900 CCA depending on the application.

I beleive its in a Sublime 'vert Challenger R/T 383

If he has to crank that thing for any length of time there could be a meltdown. :o Especially if one of those connections gets a little loose.
