Many of the early fuel guys were reluctant to adopt the "new" 426 Hemi at the time.  Donovan (and maybe even Ed Pink?) still based his aftermarket fuel blocks on the proven 392 Hemi's.  It was well into the 70's before all they all finally surrendered (including the holdout big block Chevy and Ford SOHC users) and switched to Keith Black 426 based stuff.

 ,    never realised the 392 style   carried on well into the 70s   ,  knew the  Ed Donavan  cast blocks ,  sorted out all the weaknesses &  problems with a factory OEM 392 .  interesting

I helped a friend build a funny car in '72-'73 time frame and he chose the Whale motor because parts were cheaper and more available than the Elephant motor.

It does, who knows how many engines it ran with though?  A lot of independents in those days and as John mentioned a lot of the guys still running the old style Hemi were doing so because they were cheaper.  Could have blown the 426 and switched, could have come into money and upgraded to a 426, the resto could be wrong, the resto could have come with the 392...
Who knows?
Good question though.
