Replacing vinyl top with a bedliner alternative

Anybody have any experience with replacing a vinyl roof with some sort of bed liner spray paint?  I need to replace my vinyl top in a really bad way, but I'm considering the bed liner alternative.  A google search shows people have done it, but I'm wondering if it's a legitimate idea or not.  I have a 73 charger that's never going to win any trophies, so I'm not too concerned with keeping it original or anything like that.

You càn do anything you desire, there are no rules.  My opinion, a vinyl top is cheap and a painted one looks cheap.

I'm having a hard time picturing it so its hard to offer an opinion.  To me, I can't help but think of a truck bed and I never really thought of them as attractive.  But on a car and applied properly, who knows?  :shruggy:

You know I have always thought that the Buddy Baker #6 race car looked like it had bed liner on the roof for the faux vinyl top treatment and in reality it does not look that bad and looks really close to a factory vinyl top.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

A buddy of mine used it on this.
It looks like bedliner was sprayed on the roof.

You might consider doing the next owner (or maybe even your future self) a favor, and spraying something a little easier to remove than bedliner.

It's not like the top 1/3rd of the car is gonna get bombarded with the kind of gravel assault that the undercarriage of the car gets.

What I want is something to put under the vinyl that won't rust.   Getting sick of rust bubbles every few years....

Por15 sealed roof + even coats of a 2 part industrial contact cement on roof and inside top, applied with an hvlp gun, + curing finished product in a homemade vacuum bag = one slim chance for rust to form.  Just don't forget to treat the inside of the roof or it'll just start rusting from there.   :icon_smile_big:

Way beyond my pay grade.  I would say it looks like Greek but I can read that somewhat....

If budget is a concern... I would think a new vinyl top would be cheaper than having a roof rhyno lined. I bought my top directly from Legendary when they had a special. It was $114 shipped, and I put it on myself (with a helping hand from a friend). If rust or the top itself is your concern, I would just strip the top, and paint it to match the rest of the car.

Post pics of your car! We'd love to see it!!
