proper posting etiquette

Is there a proper etiquette for posting?  For instance I sometimes find an old thread that very closely describes my situation.  Rather than  starting a new thread and have to go through the same questions that are already in the old thread, is it OK to just post to the old thread and ask my question there?  I know it is wrong to hijack someone else's active thread, but is it OK to tag along onto an inactive thread to avoid reinventing the wheel so to speak?

For tech threads it's handy to resurrect the old one. No point in having 10 threads on the same topic with varying degrees of answers.

It might be handy to have a sticky with some basic do's and don't s on posting.  I try to use common sense, but have found that common sense is not always all that common or sensible.
