I know it's a bit of a project but he should have put it back on rallyes for the sale.  it looks bad with narrow black steel wheels.

also get a used/repop rear side marker lens.  And call Dale's Cuda Shop or PCG in florida and buy nose masks.  here's our car which cosmetically is not all that much nicer but it certainly presents itself better:

well. Its a cool car. And as long as all the bird parts are correct I guess it would be ok to get. But the location of the hole In the firewall where the headlight hoses go though I have never seen in that location. Its always higher up. The higher up dimple is where I always see it. So would that be a factory goof? or???

I'd guess so?  That lower hole is where the tach wire is supposed to run through.  I haven't seen a 'bird punched there before, either.

I'd guess so?  That lower hole is where the tach wire is supposed to run through.  I haven't seen a 'bird punched there before, either.

Thank,s guy,s i was thinking on making a offer but it might hit higher then my offer on ebay If It Keeps Going .I have been looking for just a driver for a wile cant seam to find anything - That i wouldn't bury my self in if i restored it. Maybe Trading my 70 Hemi Cuda for a wing car would be easier. Of course mine is done now and worthless now i cant even enjoy it. Hard call,you decide.It does however have the vacuum hoses on top of the inner fender where they belong,very few restorations I have seen have those in the right place.

When my dad was told he had terminal leukemia we traded the car to Le Hodge at Hodge restorations for payment to restore my dads race car. Le sold the car to the Gemza's (Creations by Gemza) They had the car for several years and then traded or sold it back to Le (I think last year) I registered the car with the Superbird club in Wisconsin shortly after I traded for it. With all that being said if you are an interested buyer you now have some people to call. You can contact me as well and I will give you an honest description of what it looked like and condition when I took it out of the barn.

The seller seems to sell Superbirds fairly often so I'd guess he knows exactly what he has.

The wrong grommet hole on the firewall is kind of interesting. David Patik's 1992 article on building a Superbird has interest here.

David's notes about the difference in air conditioned and non air conditioned cars with the firewall having dimples comes to mind.

So according to David, the cars were drilled according to the options (on the big broadcast sheet?).

1968 and 1969 Chargers had to be drilled like Superbirds. Did this wrong location happen occasionally on the 1968 and 1969 Chargers too?

Also how were the holes on the firewall cut? Did a jig have to fit up to the firewall? Would it be something like a Greenlee (sic) jig like an electrician uses? I am thinking that the cuts in the firewall are not done roughly like the home hobbyist would do with a hole saw. But the factory would be cutting hundreds (if it was Chargers) of holes a day, so it would have to be a more durable cutter than a electrician's Greenlee cutter. Also at Lynch Road were they building Chargers, or just Belvederes and Coronets?

The car has the trunk lid stops, right 3 speed windshield wipers, and everything else. Somehow the wrong firewall dimple got drilled.

yes. If in fact the wrong hole did get drilled. This would be very important because its solid proof that there could be mistakes on these cars that should be accepted. So what about the core support and or trunk pil vin stamp? Are there pics of those numbers to look at?

OK, just thinking out loud here, Yes I know that's a dangerous passtime...
So lets assume that it is a real Superbird, body numbers are all there and verified....It's a column auto B5 car with a NOM and needing some parts, TLC and paint, but is a good "Starter" Superbird.
What kind of money should it bring? I was going to guess on the low end of the $60,000 to $75,000 range, but I really have no data, just a guesstimate. I think we have seen much nicer numbers matching cars sold in the mid $80,000 range. So what is the current market for a "lower end" Superbird???

 The Superbird body numbers were all good. When I found the car it had been sitting since 1978 if I remember correctly. It had a 383 magnum when I found it and I can't remember if the transmission was matching. I traded a nice NOM 1970 Road Runner for it. The family that had the car was unaware of it having a 383 as they thought it was a 440. The car has quite a bit of body filler in the right quarter and in the nose cone. The car was in an accident and drove into a ditch bowing the right rear trunk floor area of the car. This will be evident when you look at the vehicle in person and will not show up in a picture. The build sheet was removed by me prior making the trade. The car was complete including 14" rallye wheels. When I traded the car to Le Hodge he sold it to the Gemza's for about $65,000. Remember the market was better 8 or 9 years ago and I believe that was full value for the car. The car is well worth restoring if you can do most of the work yourself. You can buy a matching #'s nice car today in the $100,000 range. I know people have the dream of restoring it some day but most people don't realize a restoration is $50-60,000 or more. I hope this answers a few questions.

Update on this car 5/13/2015: I ended up buying it from Hank in October 2014. One of my friends lives by him so we checked the car out and liked it. I'm a little familiar with 'birds and it checked out legit. I'm keeping the exterior same (kind of), but redoing drivetrain and suspension (Gen 3 HEMI, 700-HP, no permanent modifications other then frame stiffening). I already restored a beat up 'Bird to stock (seen at mopar nat's 1991) and often regret losing the survivor look. Not this time! But I am doing something different - not sure how you all will like it.  More details on the web page: bannedbird.com.

I am looking for any info on the car from new to when it was put into barn around 1978. I have talked to all the owners after the barn owner (Hank, Steve Gemza, Le Hodge, and horsepwr426). Car started out B5 blue, white bench, automatic until repaint Petty blue with white vinyl top. Assume Virginia area.  I'm doing a title search.

The white top is interesting. Certainly helps identify the car in internet pictures and history (The old Beeler bird also had white top, but mine has no white nose trim). The top is not painted. Looks like the original material grain. But no "lettering" seen on underside (one area was lifted up by previous owner and checked for anything printed on underside). Don't worry: I'm not going to even try and say it is factory white top Superbird.

Also, I can provide details from broadcast sheet if it will help in clarifying the location of the firewall hole.

Just wanted to update this thread. Hope to make the Oct 22 reunion with the car. Thank you. Superbird Steve (Chicago).

Thanks for asking.  I do have some updates.  Last October I drove it.  I got the car back from the 3 years (or was it 4) it was in AZ getting converted. Removed the 383 / 727 / 8.75 rear to Gen 3 446 cid / 6L85 / Dana.  Car was "lost" for over a week on a transporter from AZ to IL.  RoadRunner Auto Transport said "we will call you tomorrow" for 2 weeks: they called me once each Friday.  I had to go to the police and was one day from them starting an investigation.

After two weeks in the truck with the key partially turned, there was no power in battery.  Jumped it and I took car off the transporter and drove to local car show.  Shouldn't have done that with no juice in the battery.  Motor gradually lost power on way home and had to get it towed.  I assume low amperage with all the fuel pumps and ignition: boy I miss simple coils and points!  I don't think it was anything major, but I need to either get more gauges to know what is going on or full time laptop.  With 3 different shops involved, I've got no electrical schematic, switches with no labels, and not sure what wires go where.  I had them remove the Holley EFI (which is now in the garbage thanks to no technical support) and put in a second EFI.  So it's a matter of me putting time in with a pad of paper and tracing wires.  But it's freezing in my garage!

But, man... does it sound good.  I thought it was the ported heads that had the sound, but a few people said it was the 8 throttle bodies that makes that "sharp" tone (cylinders don't share intake with another cylinder).  So until I get a trailer and tow vehicle, I may need to put something better than Cherry Bombs on it!

For the video shoot, my Buddy Ben drove the car along with his son and mechanic.  He said it handled very good with the coils and modern suspension.  Turn radius is about half of what it used to be.  I need to look at that.
