Nice collection of Chargers. Judging by the looks of a few they appear to be destined for Lee clones. Nice lot of cars.

Anyone here have a collection along this caliber? Owning one is fun enough............ but half a dozen :drool5:

A little lol.  Google HPLAG and you'll see.  BTW if you want to read about a QUALITY collection of Chargers read about Tim Wellborn and his uh....little collection of cars.  His story will make you absolutely green with envy...

Well I couldn't find much on HPLAG other then the cars are less than sub par but the stories are all a few years old from what I have read posted on CGLFC. I was just curious about the cars but now I'm interested in the back story now.

BTW that Wellborn collection is AMAZING! I can't imagine going through all that effort and years of work to acquire those cars, to sell many in order to keep the business lights on, and then buy them back down the road. What a story.

Yeah, Wellborn is a noteworthy man.  I'd love to drive my Charger out to his museum one day and shake his hand.  As for HPLAG, well, sellers will do what they can to sell, it's the buyer's responsibility to educate themselves on their potential purchases...

HLPAG is an older name.  The guy changes the name of the business periodically as his bad reputation catches up with him.  Avoid it like the plague.

The business is located in Lake Villa, IL and the guy's name is Hans Ludke.

At least one time he also took steps to mislead people into thinking his lot was in Cali.  I guess that was an attempt to improve his Ebay type sales.

Oh for sure he's pond scum at the very least.  I just hope that people look into him and his...product before they buy.  I for one never buy anything from anyone on eBay unless their feedback is short of perfect and the merchandise is something I'm extremely familiar with...

Thanks for the info. I had a lead on a car that appeared in that yard. It was a black 70 R/T and I so happened that I saw the 69s in the back ground. I did a little googling and found those pictures.

The only person that I have heard that had a positive experience with the guys that own the shop, is my buddy.   Why?  he bought a 68 Charger RT for $5k from them that needed a total restoration.  Maybe they didn't have enough bondo for it?  LOL.   John did the car right and it came out great.

One of the owners bought a few parts off my 68 when I was restoring it.   They bought the parts that I deemed I didn't want on my car, hence watch out.....

Are they any good?

There are a few Chargers on the website and most seem pretty rough. Albeit drivable. I'm just curious because the website has an address for them that is about 2 hours from me here in California.

Are they able to locate cars or car parts?

they do a 12 page report with heaps of pics of all the areas that sellers don't want you to see . they have saved me from buying a couple of bondo buggy's over the years,  money  well spent   .don't know about parts location but mike answers his emails fairly quickly so wouldn't hurt to ask   :Twocents:

WOW! What a mess of a car to get under false pretenses no less. I will stay clear of that outfit and anyone willing to do business with them. Its a darn shame to see buyers being duped like that. But like anything else that I have ever got myself into I learned to pour over details and learn as much as I could before making a move on something. But this HPLAG seems to try and scam even the educated buyers.

I was wondering that 10 years ago.

Life isn't always fair and some bad guys win.

On the other hand, there is only so much sympathy I can manage for people who make it so easy for Hans to do this stuff.  People keep dropping $30k on 40yo cars without even so much as seeing the car in person or googling the seller first.  I wouldn't be THAT careless about spending $3k

A fool and his money. With Google nowadays, this should never happen....however, you'd be surprized at just how much people will pay for instant gratification. ...

I almost bought a car from him last year and found one on Craigslist and got that... not much better. I did talk to him about his bad rep and he told me it was basically a bad deal between him and this guy who was in business with and no longer is .Don't know how true all that is. But any one can sell you a lemon, good thing if you can buy it local so you can keep your eye on what is going on.

Thats the reason right there.  How many times do you read on here about "there are no Chargers where I live"?  If you are overseas that can be a valid excuse but not in North America.  There may not be one on every block and there may not be one that close to you but they aren't so far away that you should ever jump on the first one you see on the internet for fear it will be the last one to ever come up for sale.
There is a 42 page thread on here of someone looking for a car and it seems mostly price driven, without the advice of people on here I have to wonder if that person would be willing to buy the first thing he saw in his price with shiny paint.

keith88

Although In my case there were some close to me none that were for sale,so i started looking other places I couldn't afford to get to those places to check them out so had to relay on photos and video that was given. It was OK but not what i was lead to believe just wish the guy was more worth coming so i new what the plan on.

Does the report read like something along the lines of a car fax report or more like here's the good and the bad with the car with details?
I would imagine that everything about the car would be covered  in the inspection and report is what I'm gathering.

That is his lot!! Was there many times back in '04 and '05. Tried buying a 69 R/T 4 speed car from him that ended up going to New York. Had a second chance at the car a year later and the guy who bought it originally was so unhappy with it when it arrived. He ruined many cars!! Including many R/T's. You would think the state of Illinois would crack down on him!!

I used Jason Phillips's company, Auto Appraise, for an inspection with a good deal of success. He does a lot of inspections himself but also hires people.  They sent me about 240-250 pictures, provided a four page report plus a video.   You can see some of his inspection reports on youtube.   Good detailed report done on a timely basis for en eBay auction (needed the report before the auction ended).  Ended up not buying the car in part due to the report.

chargerperson

Here is a link to the video of the inspection mentioned in the prior post.  It is a bit promotional on the company's part but thought I would share.  Additionally, the inspector was a bit too positive but the video was very valuable.  Car had some paint issues, many of which you can see in the 70 seconds, particularly at 1:06-1:07.  I ultimately did not buy the car in part due to the inspection.  Good car, I had thought/hoped the paint job was better than it was

If I couldn't put my hands and eyes on the car I wouldn't even think of buying it.  That sort of mentality should exist on ANY major purchases.  For me that's anything over $100.  If others are bold enough to move outside that rule then so be it...

Ghoste

I'm the same way but trust me, there are LOTS of folks out there who don't.

Ghoste/myk
I have never bought a car sight unseen but did use an inspector twice both of which raised issues that stopped the transactions.  Not sure if I would have bought without seeing or them not.  In one case, the car was in CA and I live in NY so it would have been hard to fly out there before the auction ended.  When the cars are rare (e.g., the 66 Charger pretty well put together) I may not have a choice

I did "win" an auction on eBay in the early days (2000).  Before paying I went inspected the car and renegotiated (lower) the price.  I still have that car (67 Charger) so that purchase has turned out ok.
