I did it. It made a huge difference in brightness as well as got rid of the ammeter going to discharge when I used the brakes.
Here is the thread of what I did:

I have been slowly replacing bulbs on the 73 with LED. Interior, license lamp. And I was going to do the tail lamps BUT I can not find an LED bulb that will physically fit in the socket. None if them will push far enough in. The 1156's that I bought to try, work in my 67 reverse lamps but even the first ones wouldn't go in there. Has to do with the length of the base.
Anyway I plan on doing more .  Trying to do the 1004/90 now on the 67. Just looking for good deals on EBag.
*A note of interest on the BA15D that some list on EBay. Some are quite wrong.  The 1004/90 require a base with 2 contacts.  Some are listed as one or 1156 ... not correct so be careful if you order.
I changed the dome lamp in the 73 and work and look fine. Got this.

This is the first style I tried for the tail lamps - they are in the license lamp now.

Base isn't long enough to push all the way in. Then I tried these.

Works OK in the 67 reverse lamp but still not in the 73. So may have to try something else here.

Get LED's in the same color as the lenses.  I only have them in the interior in white and it works, but for tail lights I'd get red bulbs.  I probably should have gotten blue bulbs for the interior but I do like the way it looks right now

Keith,

I went to quite a bit of trouble to detail my experience here:

ODZKing,

You're looking for the billet XP lamps. They'll fit. Available in 1156 & 1157 style, here:
Use red for red lenses, white for plate. They are worth the $.

1156: http://www.mustangproject.com/ProductDisplay.aspx?ID=49961971-88dc-4632-a803-f54b5a056b2a

1157 best: http://www.mustangproject.com/ProductDisplay.aspx?ID=fd0a6988-ad4c-4873-abc0-2ccfc2f6439c

1157 good: http://www.mustangproject.com/ProductDisplay.aspx?ID=83b39771-b033-4756-8751-aa9140ea8a63

Ditch those little acorn ones. They suck. All is detailed I'm the forum link above ^^^. The XP are CRAZY BRIGHT compared to those junk acorns (I lived & learned).

I have some on order to replace the front turn signal globes, as the standard one seem a little lame.
Will post up the results once they arrive and a link to the supplier if they're any good.
Gotta love a '69

CJ, no they won't. You see how they have a lip at the end of the base.  It will not go in far enough.

ODZKing

See how the housing has an edge.

cjw916

I was going to suggest some fine Dremel work to chamfer that lip, but my lamps pop out of the housing, it looks like yours are molded right into the housing. That's perplexing.

ODZKing

Yep, rediculous design isn't it? If the socket should go bad, toss the entire housing.
Some guys have broken them out and used "universals". Thing is the are external and if you don't seal them really wel ... well, you know that story!

For example, this one for the most part is junk

cjw916

Yeah, I suppose finding a push in socket, from another Mopar, would be one possibility? Then exercise extreme caution hole-saw drilling or Dremel-ing out perfect circles in the plastic for the new socket?

keith88

Well i just finished changing out all the bulbs in the dash to led, out side lights next.

Yep, they'll stay Incandescent regular 1157 then.
On another note, I replaced one bulb so far inside.  Happend to be the shifter bulb and because it dim's like the dash does, all it does is flicker.  Tried several, thay all do the same.  Incandescent goes back in there as well and I'm not going to even bother try converting the dash over.
I did put one in the dome lamp however. That works fine.

My shifter has an incandescent as well, the LED's just won't work in mine.  No dimming feature on that bulb though.  I only get a little over 10v at that socket for some reason and apparently it's not enough for the LED's.  Bummer because it's a world of difference between that bulb and the rest which are all LED's.

Charger74

ODZKing

It won't go into the tail lamp socket.

Charger74

Wasn't sure, thought that maybe since it's base was a bit different.

Hi,

What I miss here is some info on the brake lights. Normal bulbs are divided in 21 watts for the brake and 5 watts for the normal lightning. So when braking the lights glow much harder then normal. Although the led bulbs have two contacts, they both give the same light strength, so you won't notice the brakes when deployed. How to overcome this?

As far as I know, the rear bulbs have 2 contacts for the dim & bright settings, the body of the bulb is the ground. One circuit energized illuminates the LEDs at a less bright setting (built in resistors, I'm guessing) for dim, the other circuit energized they light up full-bright for brakes.

Trust me. They have pins so you can only install them correctly, not backwards. And they light up dim & bright just like they should.

Pics above show difference between dim & bright with a 12V battery source.

If you're using an inexpensive bulb (el-cheapo) maybe they're not lighting up correctly? The ones I detailed in my pics at the beginning of the thread are close to $20 per bulb.  Buy the good stuff. :-)
