I'd be lying if I said I didn't at least play with the idea of selling every time a shiny, new 5.0 Mustang rolled by...

I've got a nice 2013 Boss 302 just for you.

Agreed, prices appear to have gone insane !
IMO,
far beyond any normal "popularity" quotient in a normal supply vrs demand marketplace, for 45 yr old Gen II Cars that ride like a drunken elephants ?

So what else could be a factor, to the what I will call "disproportional" rise in prices ?
I believe Money chasing "value" of any kind, any asset, pushing down onto even lower models, than even the traditional "collectible" versions like the HEMI's and R/T Cars ?
Don't laugh OK !
What else explains it ?
HEMI's and R/T Cars were collectible even long ago, and commanded high prices for "badging" as assets.
But Nowadays,
seems people are willing to fork over even $10K to $15K for basically junk ?
Is the MONEY worth THAT much less ?
or,
has the hunk 'o junk reached THAT much Value ? and WHY ?
I would sure like to know ?

Case in point.... this one just went on Ebay for $20K  :shruggy: with 52 nutbar bidders ?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Charger-R-T-Hardtop-2-Door-1969-dodge-charger-r-t-/131283887642?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1e9121261a&item=131283887642&pt=US_Cars_Trucks
Granted it is an R/T... fairly complete, but needs a complete resto ?
Electrical Fire ?
Pans ?
Engine ?
WTF is going on ?

:iagree:  true that !!
although
anyone wanting a charger project to restore  , this is the type of car you need to be buying , all day long . :yesnod:   :Twocents:  , but not at that price imo just nutts  , but if that what the market dictates   :slap:  good luck to the buyers & sellers  :yesnod:  no offence meant !
still seems crazy to me  :yesnod:

not wanting to hijack the original posters thread  ,  with a load of irrelevant pictures , but ...
thought it would be a good idea to post the ebay ad pictures of the car we are talking about , for future reference , before they  disappear .

Challenger340

I agree 100%... absolutely fantastic start as a restoration candidate.
I just don't think a guy would ever find a much better ? or complete Charger to begin a project on ?
But,
THAT is part & parcel of what I am getting at ?
If that specimen is costing $19.8K right at the start(as good as it may be), IMO, a guy would really have to want THAT Charger, to the point of being prepared to keep it forever after "restoration", because he would be so far upside down financially by the time completed.

I am guessing there must be the intangible of it being a real "R/T" Car here to numbers and price that I am missing ?

Granted, lots of DIY capabilities that many can apply to "sweat equity", and some are very talented people out there, but I just can't see even in the best case scenario, that there is most likely not another $20 - $30K to be spent by the new owner bringing it back, even without their own labor 100% ?
And,
probably TWICE that much ??(no idea), if just purchasing it and expecting to PAY others to get it done ?
Only wimps wear Bowties !

I think the green R/T is a little high from bidding fever, but a complete car vs. a car that has been stripped to a shell or at least missing all the interior and/or trim has a lot of benefits:

1.  Easy to do an inventory of what is missing.
2.  Less time and money hunting for parts.
3.  One can see some of the history of the car - maintained original, day 2 racer, etc.
4.  All the fasteners are probably there.
5.  Ability to do ones' own bag and tag on disassembly.
6.  May find the broadcast sheet.
7.  Ability to take photos and record markings for an original type restoration.

I'm already thinking "what next" and I still have a few years of resto left before I can even drive it...but don't tell my wife  :RantExplode:   I seem to have this ever changing bucket list of cars that I say I want, but it always comes back to a 69 Charger being my dream car so I doubt I'll ever part with it. But it's difficult to justify adding cars to the garage without selling another.

Anyways, back to the OPs post...I find it difficult to believe there are no Chargers you'd want in Arizona or surrounding states...Since I live in Canada, I thought they were plentifull (relatively speaking)in the USA :shruggy:

There are plenty. Just to many hoarders with good intentions. Bad thing is good intentions tend to be bad on these cars, when they sit in fields waiting for resto

You can sometimes get cars out from under even the most stubborn hoarders.  But you won't get them to sell anything by making verbal offers.  Anyone with a 2nd-gen Charger visible from the road has been getting verbal offers for years or decades.

Bring a fat-looking wad of cash bills.  Show him the cash and be prepared to do the deal right on the spot.  The sight of cash will impair his judgment better than alcohol.   If you have to bring a friend or a C/C handgun for protection because it's a high dollar amount, well, so be it.

It also might help not to let him see your empty waiting trailer until the deal is done & signed.  The trailer will remind him that you're really going to take the car away.

Failing that, keep going back to the guy periodically and keep giving him fresh copies of your contact info.  You never know when he might get in a fit of financial frustration or need.  He might call you up 5 years later, saying "I need that money TODAY, and come get the car before I change my mind."

Yes I realize that when you strip that green Charger down there will be lots of Swiss cheese on display but I have to say that $20,000.00 for something with a nice interior and all the pieces ,parts and fasteners there  doesn't sound like such a bad deal to me.  For someone willing to do the work themselves that car is a really nice piece.
