440 to hemi swap

I am still contemplating a motor swap for my '69 RT. The numbers match and with prices going crazy (just turned down $50,000 cash) I would like to store the 440 away for safe keeping. I am looking at a mopar 528 crate hemi. I am not interested in crazy power and know that a built stroker is tons more fun for lots less cash. I just like the big valve covers better, I guess.  I have about $19000 saved for car stuff and was wondering if someone could provide a list of what will be needed for the swap.

I know I need:

528 crate motor
power booster relocation kit
schumacher engine mounts
headers
new exhaust
air cleaner

What about

pulleys?
wiring harness?
throttle cable?
carb?
starter?
electronic ignition kit?
anything else?

Thanks.

  Pullleys will swap
wire harness will work
Throttle cable will depend on intake & carb system being used with it
Carb ? what do you have , the smallest CFM I would use is 1050 on a 528
starter wil work with the trans you have now
electronic ign will swap also or use the MP kit, it comes with the dist so you just need a box & wiring
Make SUre you have 3/8" fuel line including pick up in the tank

Thanks for the thoughts.  I don't remember what size fuel lines I replaced when I did the car ten years ago. Hopefully, I was smart enough to go with 3/8- I'll have to check.

I have a four speed and would probably replace the clutch although it is not that old.

Is my current flywheel on the 440 going to work with the hemi?

I have a true RT and don't think I will have problems with the torsion bars or leaf springs. I already have frame connectors. Any thoughts on the suspension? I don't plan on hitting the strip. Only looking for cruising.

I have a dana 60 with 3.73s so feel okay there.

Thanks for the help.

the flywheel is different in most cases, all 440s have the 6 bolt , most Hemis have 8 bolt although you can use the 440 crank in the Hemi , so you will need a new flywheel
if you have the 143 tooth flywheel you are good , if you have the 130 tooth make Sure you have the 10.95 clutch not the 10.5", I like the McLeod Borg & Beck / long style clutches
If you have the original .92 T bars I would look at upgrading to the .96 bars

Great info.

So my laundry list looks like this:

Hemi crate motor (might go with 472 instead of 528- money!)
new exhaust
hemi manifolds
143 tooth 8 bolt flywheel
mcleod borg & beck long style clutch
hemi air cleaner
schumacher engine mounts
holley carb
power booster relocation kit
3/8 fuel lines

going to reuse:

pullys
starter (not sure about this)
bell housing
current 4 speed trans

anything I have forgotten?

Couple other questions-hope I'm not bothering you, Neil.

what size exhaust would you run with the 472?
do you know model # for the clutch you would use?  (hope thats not pushy) 10.95" with 143 tooth as well?
living in Ga would you worry about heat risers?
Which Holley would you use for the 472?
Any way to tell before tear down whether my current starter will work?

your starter will work with the belhousing you have , it is working now right !!
11" is used with 143 toothflywheel , 10.95 is used with 130 tooth flywheel
I just Happen to have the clutch sitting here for another customers Hemi swap Part # 360953 for the 10.95" pressure plate & #260851 for the 18 Spline 10.95" disc , it will be a different # for the 23 spline disc
I would use 3" exhuast with a 472 or 528
I wouldn`t  use the heat riser here where I live nevermind in GA
single carb with square bore flange I would use the Holley 950 HP series carb [no choke with removeable air bleeds ], if you are using a single 4 bbl with a dominator flange I would use an annular 1050 dominator , dual carb cross ram a pair of Holey 660 center squirters
No Problems with the ??s
I may be in GA later this year too

The best I can seem to do on time frame for the hemi is around summer. When might you be coming this way? Perhaps I could help fund the trip or some other arrangment and we could do some engine swapping. If you want to send me a message maybe we can work something out. I don't mind paying for piece of mind. I am decent mechanically, but with this much money being invested I plan on finding some knowledgeable help.

Also, I am ready to pull the trigger on the 528. Any ideas where some may be in stock- I know how backlogged they have been, but perhaps you have some connections.

Just a heads up.  If you try to use a 143 tooth flywheel with hemi exhaust manifolds, you will have a starter fit problem.

The electrical studs will be so close to the manifold that you will have to relocate them.

The only starter that will fit is the very early model (without the two bolts holding the solenoid together).  The new style mini starter will not fit at all.

Save yourself the headache, and use the 130 tooth flywheel OR headers.  Good Luck!!!
