Trying to get started on my charger project but, Indiana requires VIN verification for out of state vehicles, to prove car is not stolen. I have a title and a vin in 3 locations. But since the VIN isn't 17 characters no one can verify. Indianapolis police are not cooperating. What should I do?

Ghoste

Is there a local car club that can help you?  On that entire Indy police force there has to be at least one officer who is a car guy, the trick of course is to find him.  Look outside the Mopar realm, go to a cruise night and ask around.  Maybe a smaller town outside of Indy with a local sheriff who can help?

States are definately different on their laws. We have vin verification here in the state of Texas, the form is called the green sheet.  Ours clearly is not as strict as your state.  When you say 3 locations, which one's are you referring to.  Do you buy chance have the broadcast sheet?  Do you have the original drivetrain? Would they accept a certified car appraisal?  I also agree with the comment Ghoste posted.

Cncguy

I don't have original drivetrain. I have fender tag, dash vin, and trunk lip vins. The core support number is MIA, must have been replaced at sometime

moparnation74

Has the dash been removed? The important items you have to retitle is the title you have, vin plate, and the trunk lip.  The fender tag is great to have for correctness/originality but title purposes it is just a piece of metal.  However, more support is better.  Since I am not familiar with Indiana's DMV, what is the roadblock they are telling you?

Cncguy

They can no longer search a VIN under 17 characters

Ghoste

But there is a way to work within the system still, its just that no one you've spoken to so far is willing to try.  The auction at Auburn IN move thousands of cars each year and they aren't going all out of state.

Sounds like you ran into a DMV worker reading a script.  There is some miscommunication there.

Troy

What? It's not like it's a covered wagon. They only changed the VIN format in 1981. They should only need to verify the previous title matches the VIN on the car. Their website says you can have a police officer do it.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ghoste

Yes, the sheriff in Auburn used to come out there all the time to inspect cars.

Cncguy

I just got off the phone with the BMV. They told me all the police needed to do was verify the VIN attached to the car matched the title. There is no need to search a database. So now I have to call the police back and have them sign off.

Homerr

Make sure your dash VIN is correct with the correct rosette rivets.  If it isn't they'll likely pop your dash VIN plate off then and there and confiscate it.  They'll issue a rebuild title or whatever they call it.

I had this done once in Washington state, the troopers riveted a state plate to the body part of the door jamb with the new state-issued VIN.  Super sucktastic!

If Indy cops won't cooperate, find a state patrolmen.

Contact the Indiana State Police, they ought to know the rules.

Cncguy

Thanks XS29L9B. After Indianapolis Police refused to come back out, I took your advise and contacted the Indiana state police. They came right out and verified it, and he seemed happy to help.

MD can do vin searches and its very easy to title just about anything here believe it or not.

When I registered my out of state purchase in MD all they asked for was the title and a bill of sale. No one even looks at the car when you register it. No inspections are required. Just proof that you have insurance, pay the taxes and you walk away with plates in your hands.

Well I guess then the Indianapolis PD would not be able to verify anything 1981 or older!

69_500

Sorry did not see this yesterday, I would have sent ya a Indiana trooper who loves old mopars. I called the same guy to do the title verification on all of the cars I have bought from out of state.

Cncguy

Forgot to mention the state police did ask to see fender tag.

Ghoste

So you have it all taken care of now?

Cncguy

Yep its all taken care of
