It's not "cheap" - it's overpriced. It may be rare and unique but it ain't a factory Hemi so it's not going to command the same price as one.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

charger_fan_4ever

Whats a clean 71 383 vert go for ? 60k ?

Whatever the price add $20k for a hemi that is what its worth imo. Nothing anywhere near 500k.

Wow I have never seen headers like that!?
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Ford had headers with a collector something like that for the NASCAR Boss 429.

426 Hemi R/T Challenger Shaker Convertible 1971

RARE RARE ONE-OF-A-KIND
May Be ONLY ONE Known to EXIST

This very special 1971 Hemi Challenger Convertible with a scheduled production date of Wednesday, May 26, 1971, left the assembly plant in Hamtramck, MI with a 383 Four-Barrel Engine.  At its time of purchase from Claude R Short Dodge, Inc. in Santa Monica, CA, the original purchaser ordered a FACTORY 426 HEMI ENGINE through the dealership from Chrysler Corporation and it was installed by Claude R Short Dodge, Inc. before taking delivery of the vehicle.  An Addendum to the original Dodge window sticker for the 426 Hemi Engine was authorized by Chrysler Corporation and added by the dealership.

The original window sticker and the original addendum along with a copy of the original broadcast sheet comes with the car.

This 1971 Hemi Challenger Convertible had a complete rotisserie restoration in 2003 and has been stored in a climate-controlled facility since its restoration.  Also included in this vehicle's portfolio are restoration receipts from 2003 as well as original 1971 dealership advertisements and operator's manual, wiring diagram manual, "Illustrated Facts and Features Manual" and an original 1971 Dodge "Scat Pack" brochure featuring the wild tubes exhaust headers.

Included as well are Chrysler Corporation warranties and exclusions for the 426 cu in "maximum performance" Hemi engine, tire warranties, engine starting instructions tag, other informational tags pertaining to the 426 engine, fender tag decoding lists, letter from Galen V Govier stating that the 1971 383-4BBL DODGE Challenger Convertible VIN JH27N1B405248 is now in the Chrysler Registry and is number 29 of only 31 built in sequence of 1971 383-4BBL DODGE Challenger Convertible's registered, that sold new in the USA.  This is truly an exceptional representation of the Classic-Muscle Car of its day!

This 1971 Hemi Challenger R/T 4-Speed Convertible was decoded and certified by Galen V Govier on January 30, 2003 and is in the Chrysler Registry!

This beautiful Hemi Challenger presents a rare opportunity to be included in anyone's special and unique collection!

This is an interesting case for someone collecting the oddball stuff.

It also brings into the mix the value of REAL documentation.  Inspecting the car will (or does) show it to be a clone hemi car but the paper trail gives it a unique position.

Let's say this car is extra special because of the circumstance. (collectors are an odd group). I would expect that the documentation is a key part of this.  That thought leads to the need for the documents to be real (not fabricated).

So in this case the car was born something other than what it is and that's a collector negative.  But if the dealer made changes to meet the buyers desire before delivery and all appropriate documentation proved that than the buyer took possession of a new car as he ordered it --  :shruggy:

This is of course a string of technicalities but some like the odd stuff to the point of paying mega bucks for it.

OK--back to my reason for posting---If the potential extra value depends heavily on a few pieces of paper than the value of those pieces of paper is clear.  If it becomes common for identifying documents to be fabricated than that would tend to reduce their value as a factor in an appraisal. And this car would be just another clone.

So for those out there that feel the need to generate fake paperwork for whatever reason, your short term potential gain dilutes the pool we all swim in.  And it causes cynicism.  We are all worse off because of it. :Twocents:

I have done some looking and it looks like those are Hooker "wild tubes" headers.

Mytur Binsdirti

When I see stuff like the whole undercarriage painted black (including the gas tank & straps), painted upper control arm cams & GM convolute tubing over the wiring, it just screames hack job. To ask the kind of money he is asking is totally absurd.  ::)

tan top

yes I thought that  about the  plastic  wiring covers & black out underside  , also the  painted camber / casting adjuster bolts etc   , in the engine bay &  door striker ,  battery cut off , its on the wrong post too .   IF  :Twocents:   its was worth that asking price  :shruggy:   , it should be 100% correct OEM . save for the dealer installed stuff & how they installed it .

Ghoste

I don't like the phrase "Chrysler authorized" about the dealer addendum, once it's delivered I doubt Chrysler much gave a rats ass beyond warranty issues.  Is there other proof it was done at the dealer?

tan top

guess my suspicious mind   :coocoo: is working over time  ,   that dealers label , has anyone seen one before ? why would it be typed out on one , surly it would be just on a invoice from the selling dealer / service department  ,  & whats been done hand written with the part numbers of parts added , not option codes  ,  in the appropriate boxes etc ,
surly there would of been a long  :yesnod:  long   list of all the parts & part numbers   & the price  with tax & labor at the bottom  ,    don't even see a HEMI K frame  under there  , wonder what they used for  motor mounts  :scratchchin:

could see a sticker like that being made , & put along side the normal window sticker , if the dealer ordered it & built it  for the show room or promotional stuff etc  , but  not for a sold car  :shruggy:

no offence meant to the seller !  if you are reading this       awesome car , good luck with the sale  ;)

!! i'm just curious , about how Chrysler / mopar / dealers  went about stuff back in the day   :popcrn: :shruggy:

And if the seller is reading this, by all means follow the turbanized ones advice and get rid of the horrid plastic convoluted tubing crap.

Very pretty car. Love the headers. Not worth the $ IMO, but to each his own.

polywideblock

isn't the totally black underside part of the dealer installed j55  undercoating   :scratchchin:

I don't think its worth 500K either but it is  a unique piece of mopar history   :yesnod:
still a very nice car ,so what is it really worth ?

100% correct.  Chrysler never authorized anything on this conversion....because a dealership is an independent business - they are not Chrysler!  I believe there's been an entire thread devoted to this subject recently.  :D
