Maybe some more information on the symptoms will help. Was the engine/lifters ticking? Did the car actually overheat as in radiator boil over? Or is it possible gauges were not functioning properly? Did this all happen suddenly at the same time? How low was the oil when you checked it and it said low? On the stick?

the lifters were not ticking and i could hear it run into the overflow. and there was maybe 1/4 inch of oil on dipstick.

If you are experiencing trouble with some or all of the gauges (exc. the alt gauge) it could be due to the voltage limiter in the dash. The backfiring could be due to carburetor or ignition problems. To have all these symptoms at the same time is a little unusual unless you had a catastrophic failure. How does it run since this happened?

You have engine problems, low oil at the dipstick sometimes means one or more of the galley's is clogged. Backfiring and overheating could be a byproduct of the engine getting seriously hot from oil starvation.

Drain the oil and search for metal or clumps of sludge.

Also, change your oil filter, I have heard of filters breaking down and sopping up the oil flow.

BTW: There are other reasons for your problems, bad oil pump.

Good luck!!!

Thank you for all your help! :) I'm going to try different distrubitor see what that does.
